First Impressions|How to Keep a Mummy – IT’S HELLAAAA CUUUTE!!!~

I don’t know about you guys, but sometimes I have these really terrible days. Sometimes I’m just hella down, and I want something to just distract myself from the bad stuff and brighten up my mood. Usually pictures of videos of cute animals would do. However, lately I’ve been watching How to Keep a Mummy (ミイラの飼い方/Miira no Kaikata, aka “Mummy in My Home”)! It’s incredibly light-hearted and adorable! I highly recommend this one guys!

I completely overlooked the adorableness when I saw the promo image as a thumbnail…

To be honest, I went in not really knowing what to expect. Prior to watching the first episode, I hadn’t read the series before. I was on a road trip and just thought I’d look up something random to watch on Crunchyroll. I saw the thumbnail of the adorable little mummy and the episode title, “White, Round, Tiny, Wimpy, and Ready”. I’m glad I did, because I quickly fell in love with this series. This post will be based on the first 5 episodes which have aired as I’m writing this post (I tend to write my stuff hella in advance).

Kashiwagi Sora is living a normal high school student life, when his “adventurer” father sends him a mummy from his travels in Egypt! Sora balks at the letter from his crazy dad (“I found a cool mummy, so I decided to leave it with you, son!”) at first, but the mummy that emerges from inside the huge coffin is a mere 12 centimeters tall–small enough to fit in the palm of his hand… Not only that, it’s shy, a crybaby, and most of all, heckin’ cute. And so, Sora and ends up keeping the mummy, naming his new little buddy “Mii-kun.” But living with a mummy might be easier said than done…!

The anime is based on the series by Utsugi Kakeru and published by Comico. After I started the anime, I did start reading the original series. I read through about 13 or so chapters. I have to be honest, the art was a bit simple and at times a bit rough to look at. Well, moreso with first few chapters. Though the non-human characters were still quite adorable. Overall, I wouldn’t have thought the art to be anything interesting (to my personal tastes). However, the story and characters are still great! The anime version definitely looks much nicer and cleaner. I definitely prefer the anime’s style of art.

There are some slight differences between the original and the anime. The anime was quite similar at first, but started to change a bit around episode 2 when Mii-kun goes to school with Sora. The difference is that a jerk in the class steals Mii-kun to give to his girlfriend. Dude denies having stolen Mii-kun, and him and his girlfriend cause a bit of a scene with Sora and Tazuki. In the originial, the boys have to sneak into the girls’ bathroom to save Mii-kun. In this version you see a bit more of Motegi Asa’s personality. She’s quite perceptive and easy going as well. She’s also pretty popular and well liked by everyone. In fact Motegi sees the boys in front of the bathroom and just pushes them in. She tells them that if anyone asks, they can say that she gave them permission. And true enough, someone walks in to see the boys in the girls’ bathroom. However, she’s totally okay with it after being told that Motegi gave them permission.

CHARACTERS

Mii-kun is my pure and precious child~

Overall, the characters and the anime art style are incredibly adorable. It’s definitely the type of series to pull on your heartstrings if you like small and cute things. Of course the Mii-kun, the mummy, is the star of the show. Mii-kun is tiny, adorable, and ever so sweet. Other than that, there isn’t much known about Mii-kun. There’s an episode where Sora had a cold, and Mii-kun secretly tended to him throughout the night. It was incredibly sweet to see Mii-kun care for Sora in his (her?) own way. I really want my own little mummy now.

Mii-kun isn’t the only adorable creature in this series. Pochi, the family dog, is also quite adorable. It’s cute to see Pochi and Mii-kun cuddling and napping together~

There’s also a little oni child (oni=ogre) named Conny (pronounced “Ko-Ni”). This one seems to be attached to Sora’s friend, Kamiya Tazuki. It’s pretty derpy in both personality and appearance, but still cute~ He’s a bit more rambunctious and tends to throw a thumbs up alot.

You also have this hella adorable and caring little dragon named Isao. Isao is attached to Motegi. Though initially she was scared of it because she thought it was a giant lizard.

It seems that there will also be more cute little supernatural creatures in the future. The next little supernatural creature is what I assume is a baku (dream/nightmare eaters that are often depicted resembling tapirs).

Of course the human characters are interesting as well! Though you can see that I’m more about the cute little supernatural cuties.

Kashiwagi Sora is our main character here. He’s a high school dude with an eccentric adventurer of a father. His dad is always out on his adventures, so Sora takes care of the house and his aunt. He’s good at housework and is like a mother and a housewife. He’s very kind, understanding, and very knowledgeable when it comes to different supernatural creatures. However, he can be very protective and scary when ticked off.

Kamiya Tazuki is Sora’s best friend. He seems mature and has a bit of a seemingly cold personality. Despite how he seems, Tazuki is a good guy and actually cares. He’s a bit sadistic though.

Motegi Asa is Sora and Tazuki’s classmate. She’s pretty popular and well liked by everyone. The girl isn’t scared of bugs, but she’s highly afraid of lizards. She’s a kind and sweet girl. She does have some crazy strength though.

Kashiwagi Kaede is Sora’s aunt. She lives with Sora. Kaede’s basically always being taken care of by Sora. She cares alot about her nephew. She’s basically always working in her room. She’s also a bit eccentric. Her personality undergoes drastic switch when she has her glasses on.

OPENING/ENDING
The opening and ending are as you’d expect it to be. It’s very colorful, upbeat, and cute. The opening is “不思議な旅はつづくのさ(Fushigi na Tabi wa Tsuzuku no sa)” by Tsuribitto. The title loosely translates to something like “The Continuing Magical Journey” (I’m working with Google Translate here)? While the ending is “Rosetta Stone” by an idol group called Iketeru Hearts. The music isn’t really the type I’m into, but both songs are upbeat and cute.

Also, it seems that Sanrio previously had a bit of a collab with How to Keep Your Mummy. You can also see little Sanrio Easter eggs in the episodes, such as Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll.
