What Minty Is Currently Reading: Villainess Manhwa Series Edition

Hello BAYOG Fam!~ HAPPY FRIDAAAAY~ It’s Minty again!~ As y’all know, I took a mini-break (kinda…sorta…) to recharge a bit from burnout. I slowly came back with my Music Monday posts. Although, I suppose I’m still feeling a bit of burn out. Rather than burn out, it’s more so laziness and lack of motivation… as well as hella sleep deprivation… I got plenty of ideas. I’m just not in the mood to write. So I’m just letting you know that despite my efforts to be on a regular-ish posting schedule, I may be posting a bit irregularly again… Anyway, today’s post is on some of the titles I’ve been reading!~

As you know, I started [reading alot more manhwa/manga/manhua/webtoons] and [webnovels] since the beginning of quarantine during this crazy pandemic. I just know I lost count after 800 something… Anyway, excessive free time during quarantine got me into alot of new genres and series I honestly was never really interested in before. Since quarantine, I’ve been reading hella villainess redemption, villainess-as-the-protagonist/heroine, otome, and isekai series. Definitely plenty of villainess related titles though. Before quarantine, I never really read these kinds of genres before. I found villainess series to be pretty refreshing and interesting. It’s interesting to see the story from the lens of the “bad guy”, or that the “bad guy” is actually the good guy. Plus, y’all know I love seeing characters get served hella karma. Although, I admit that after reading alot of different series, alot of them do start to feel kind of the same… Still, there are some really interesting ones. So I thought I’d share some of the villainess manhwa titles I’ve really been reading and enjoying. Shout out to [Nabe-chan] at [GeekNabe]!~ I got the idea from her [recommendation list of villainess otome/isekai manga] series~ I think almost all of the manhwa series I’ve listed are adaptations of some popular fantasy/romance novels too. I’m actually reading some of the webnovels as well~ I’ll actually try to keep it a bit shorter and not get too detailed about these here, as I do plan on doing individual posts. Eventually, anyway…

Before I get into it, you should know that alot of these stories sometimes have some sensitive topics and themes. As always, I’ll do my best to put trigger/content warning tags for you to help you decide whether the series is for you or not.

What I liked:

• Freakin’ gorgeous AF art.
• Refreshing story and characters.
• Bishiesssssssss. Hell yassss. We got some hella fine bishies with fine personalities. They got me feelin’ all soft and squishy. SIIIRSSS. Y’all are not good for my heart.
• Hella likeable/interesting protagonist. She’s a fangirl. I love how she fangirls hella hard for Libertia, even after she’s become Libertia. Her fangirl reactions to the male characters too. As a fangirl, I relate. ONE OF US. ONE OF USSSS. But seriously, she’s really funny. I also love that she’s actually practical and not dumb. Finally a character with common sense.
• Good use of the “misunderstandings unwittingly leading to characters to pity and favor the protagonist” trope. It’s not overly excessive, and it’s not like hella dumb misunderstandings that make me go “Bruh…BRUHHHH…WTF???” These misunderstandings are actually pretty funny and endearing.

AHHHH!! This one is probably one of my current favorites! PLUS BISHIESSSS~ Y’all know how I feel about bishies!~ Especially soft and sweet bishies!!! *cries* Anyway, I absolutely love the art for this manhwa. It’s incredibly gorgeous. The story is really entertaining too, plus there’s plenty of comedy. Like I said, sometimes of these kinds of stories can all start to feel the same. But this one has been really fun so far. The story has it’s own unique characteristics and charm. Especially with the protagonist. Praise the manhwa gods for a protagonist that isn’t a frustrating airhead!

What I liked:

• Tia, the female protagonist. I love that she’s actually very intelligent. She’s witty and competent. HELL YES for another female lead who isn’t a dumb and useless airhead.
• Bishiessss. By bishies, I mean Cedric and his thicc eyebrows. LMAO
• Male lead. Cedric is the righteous, honest, kind, sweet, and respected type of male lead. Kind and sweet is just my type~ huhuuu~
• Tia recognizes her villainous ways. She recognizes what she did wasn’t good, and that there were consequences. I like that she owns up to her actions. She recognizes she needs to make things right, and she actually puts in every possible effort to do so.
• Tia is still somewhat a villainess. I like that she still recognizes her wrongdoings even after going back in time. She’s set on making things right. However, she’s still using her villainous ways to do so. She’s still using her intelligence and manipulation skills, but for good this time. However, it’s still dirty work.
• I liked that this was a story where a character didn’t have to necessarily be all good and pure. Tia is shown to have a somewhat naiive and innocent side. However, we also know that she’s capable of some crazy manipulation and villainess shit.
• Slightly more on the serious/mature side.

I think it’s interesting that Tia is a character that is fully aware of her actions. I like that it’s not like she’s all, “TADAH I’m a good person now! It’s not like I ever did anything wrong!” I like that she still recognizes her wrongdoings and is still ready to face punishment. But only after she uses her intelligence and manipulative skills to raise up Cedric, because she knows that he’s the best choice for everyone.

I will warn you that the beginning, right before Tia goes back in time, is a bit graphic and can be disturbing. But it’s just those chapters showing the torment and punishment Tia went through before she decided to go make things right.

What I liked:

• Melissa, the female protagonist. I love her. She’s such a bad ass. I love that she doesn’t take shit from anyone. I love that she calls out the male leads on how shitty they are.
• This story shows that you don’t need a man. *cue Miss A’s [I Don’t Need A Man]* I like that it shows that you don’t need to rely on a man. Melissa is a bad ass, and takes care of everything well on her own. She don’t need no man, nor should you. It’s a matter of one’s own strength and value.
• Bishieeeeee male lead. Nine is precious and I love him. He’s the only decent dude in the novel. He’s a sweet, soft, and loyal boiiiiii. I love that he’s not the male lead that saves the damsel. Rather he gets saved, and I love that he supports Melissa.
• Yuri, the female lead of the novel. I love how she loves Melissa and her reactions to Melissa’s actions. It’s also great to know that she’s actually sick of the bullshit from the novel’s male leads.
• Comedy. This series is hella hilarious.
• Refreshingly different. Again, it’s a matter of there’s a strong female character and she really doesn’t need to rely on a man. That paired with great art and comedy? You got gold.
• It calls out toxic behavior of the male leads. You got cheating, gaslighting, violence, stalking, etc. I love that Melissa calls them out on that shit.

A VILLAINESS IS A GOOD MATCH FOR A TYRANT

Rage/Frustration Level: None yet? — I don’t have anything to rage over yet. It’s already satisfying to see the Emperor not even give a glance to anyone else. That and the comedy basically cancels out any rage/frustration I would feel.

What I liked:

• Cecile is an interesting female lead. She’s honestly a sweet and innocent girl, but she has to act out the part of being a crazy and villainous woman. Which she apparently does so well.
• The crazy and bloodthirsty tyrant is hella soft for the female lead. I know it’s a common trope, but it’s really cute how smitten he is with her.
• Comedy. Again, Emperor Estian is having Cecile act out the part of a crazy villainous empress who has the crazy bloodthirsty tyrant wrapped around her finger. It’s funny how far they go to sell it. Cecile gets hella stressed and feels bad. Meanwhile, Estian is hella entertained.
• I ship. Cecile and Estian are cuuute.

What I liked:

• Otome/Isekai series. I honestly never read or had any interest in otome/isekai series until I read this.
• Gorgeous art. Seriously, the art is gorgeous.
• Bishiesss. Okay, the bishies look hella gorgeous. Even if some of them are assholes. Assholes…but they pretty to look at…
• The protagonist who became Penelope isn’t a dumb airhead. Praise the manhwa gods. However, she’s not OP either. Which is great. I honestly can’t stand when characters are too OP. I feel like the OP protagonist trope can be pretty overdone. Also it can be too much, and they just don’t feel very real or relatable. However, the protagonist feels a bit more like a real person because of her struggles from her past life. I like that she can really relate to the original Penelope too. I honestly could really feel when she got really emotional.

However, the point was to show she’s hella mature and beautiful looking. Also, even she’s disgusted by such lecherous looks. So it’s to show you how shitty certain characters are. Although it’s more noticeable in the novel and not so much the webtoon.
Rage/Frustration Level: YEAH. FUCK THOSE SELFISH THE BITCHES — YO. FUCK MIELLE. That little manipulative ass white lotus BITCH. Actually fuck that whole family. Fuck the nanny and that other pretentious bitch too. Although this isn’t as rage inducing as Remarried Empress or The Kind Older Sister Is No More. Would still yeet them into a volcano.

What I liked:

• Aria is a witty and smart character. Not smart as in education, because it’s shown that she wasn’t exactly book smart. She’s actually a pretty normal girl, but she has great wit and knows how to make use of her knowledge from the original timeline. She’s street smart and just pretty savvy.
• Aria recognizes what she did in the original timeline was wrong. Basically before she was executed, she genuinely felt remorse for her actions and wanted to apologize to Mielle. But then Mielle dropped that she was a bitch and had manipulated and set up Aria from the beginning.
• Aria is still somewhat of a villainess. She does villainess type of shit to get revenge on Mielle and everyone who seriously wronged her and even led to her mother’s death. I liked that this was a story where a character didn’t have to necessarily be all good and pure. I liked that it was a, “You want me to be the bitch? Fine, I can be a bitch.”
• Karma. Y’all I hated Mielle and all of them. You guys know I love some good serving of karma.
• Supportive male lead~ UGH. I love when a male lead is understanding and supportive. Especially in a time and setting where Aria was often looked down, disregarded, and had credit taken from her because of her gender and her background (Being the daughter of a prostitute who married a noble). He’s honestly not bothered by that at all, and is attracted to her intelligence and charm. I stan.

• Bishies with absss. Again, the bishies can be annoying and frustrating. But they still pretty to look at… Huhuuu~(˵ ಸ u ಸ˵)
• Nadricka! My sweet and soft boiiii~ He’s a puppy. I swear he’s like the only normal one. He a loyal boiiii~ I love him~
• The female protagonist is smart. Again, thank you for not giving me another dumb and useless airhead as a protagonist. It’s not like she was a player dropped into the game. She was a total normie who woke up as the villainess in what appears to be a game. I like that she really thinks things through. She has to use her wit to survive as well as avoid the shit from Yuriel, the trashy thot main female character/player in this game.
• Karma. Fuck Yuriel. She’s on my list of characters I would yeet into a volcano. She’s stupid, selfish, and incredibly greedy. You guys know I love some good serving of karma. I can’t wait for her downfall.
• Somewhat more serious/mature side.

• Art is pretty~
• Bishiesssss~ Prince Izana is pretty to look at~
• Ginger is kind of cute. I love her reactions. Even though she was supposed to be the villainess, she honestly seems like a sweet girl at times.
• Comedy. So Izana can read minds if he makes eye contact with people. Ginger has some pretty funny and thirsty AF thoughts though. So it’s pretty LOL Izana finds it a bit awkward, but amusing as well.

What I liked:

• A highly competent, fully capable, and intelligent female lead. Madea is a bad ass. Sure, she screams villainess… but I honestly can’t blame her.
• Interesting and complex story with complex characters. I think it’s interesting that it explores both the “heroine” and the “villainess”. It’s interesting in that they are swapped and have to see and experience the other person’s life and POV.
• Bishieeeee~ I love Helio and how loyal he is. Helio > the trash Prince.
• Karma. Y’all know I’m waiting for some good serving of karma.
• Slightly more on the serious side

This is an interesting one because you go with typical expectations on “good” and “bad”. That the heroine does no wrong, and that the villainess is awful. Certainly Madea seems to truly be a villainess that you should dislike at first. However, we learn more about the circumstances and our opinions start to change.
