The Importance of Self Improvement: Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki

As someone who has been on a journey to constantly improve for the last two years, I found myself gravitating towards Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki. When I first stumbled on the light novel in Barnes and Noble, I initially was intrigued by the interesting art work and wanted to know more about the character behind it. After doing some research before reading, I learned it was about gaming and self improvement. Seems like I was it’s target audience.. but for more reasons than I thought.

What does self improvement have to do with video games? This is something I feel any gamer is asked but in a more judgmental manner. “How can you spend all this time inside? You waste all this time on your video games. Go get a life.” So on.. But what can be said about gamers is, the drive to accomplish goals. The drive to improve in order to defeat tough adversaries. Being able to understand where you are behind or stuck and learning how to get over plateaus. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki is about learning how to take this drive/determination and apply it to other real life problems. How do we improve our base stats? What must we do to level up?

This story follows our main protagonist, Fumiya Tomozaki, one of the top players of Attack Families or Tackfam, let’s be honest this game is literally a knock off Smash Bros so I’m just going to call it Smash. Tomozaki, being this nobody at school but an extremely high level player in smash, has developed this outlook on life that he just has low base stats. He does not look good, he is not talented in sports or good with girls. He sticks to what he knows and what he is good at, Smash.

When Tomozaki encounters a high level player online that asked him to meet up in person, he is shocked to learn that the player he beat was actually the most popular girl in school. As the story progresses, he learns that he’s been looking at the game called life, the completely wrong way. Even if his base stats are low, he doesn’t do anything to improve them or level up. This girl, teaches him with weekly goals how he can became a high level player in life and why it is the second best game to Smash.

During such a stacked season, I can imagine this series not getting much attention but I think it’s a great cool down series to watch after a long day. If you’re a reader, also a good book to read before bed. There’s lots of great bits of knowledge that you can apply to your everyday life. I think one of the most important things is knowing that you have more control than you think and you can always improve. A tiny bit of effort can make yourself a little better than you were yesterday. And you also learn that the people you think are perfect aren’t always what they seem.

As someone who loved the light novel, I’m very excited to see that such a series was going to be animated. This story that can gamify self improvement, be put in front of more people, makes me so happy. I’m passionate about self improvement and can be extremely competitive in video games. So if this sounds like you, Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki, is definitely for you.
