WEBTOON|Bunny & Her Boys — Bishies, Bishies Everywhere (aka The Dream)

HIHI BAYOG Fam!~ I’m back with another webtoon post! Today’s webtoon is [바니와 오빠들/Bani Oppadeul], or “Bunny & Her Boys”. It’s a 2019 webtoon/manhwa by Nieun, and is currently being published on [Daum webtoons]. Unfortunately, it’s only being fan-translated online at the moment since it’s not yet officially published in English.

The series is a romantic comedy and slice of life type of story. Obviously, it’s also a reverse harem too. Honestly, I randomly picked this up without really reading the synopsis at first…cuz the usual “I read too much during this pandemic and ran out of shit to read”. I honestly ended up really liking the series. It’s really funny. Also, I think it’d make a good K-Drama too.

SYNOPSIS:
As a freshman in university, Bunny declared, “I don’t care about about a guy’s appearance at the slightest.” Honestly, she did. However, she decided she would choose a guy for his personality over his looks. Thus she ended up becoming a campus couple with an average guy. Unfortunately, it ended up being the worst relationship ever. The guy turned out to be a pompous ass. Bunny vows to stay true to her desires to just choose a handsome guy next time. However, she’s not keen in jumping into a relationship yet due to the trauma from her previous relationship. Fate has other plans though. To Bunny’s surprise, 5 hella handsome guys drop into her life. They all seem to want to get close to her and keep texting her.

I know. I’m shit when it comes down to writing a synopsis. I know it sounds boring. However, I swear that it’s actually a really fun series. Especially if you’re into those romantic-comedy and slice of life type of series and K-Dramas. Also, bishies. Bishies freakin’ everywhere. Like it’s a typical story about a girl getting a 썸/Some relationship (we’re gonna go over this in a bit) with some cuties.

What is “썸/Some”?

썸/Some comes from “something”. As in “there’s something going on” between two people. It’s when they’re more than a friendship, but not quite lovers. There seems to be mutual feelings/attraction, but it hasn’t been made clear and they’re not quite in a relationship (yet). It’s basically like when you’re flirting or talking to someone? Anyways, there was a hella popular song called “썸(Some)” by SoYou (formerly of SISTAR) and Junggigo. It also featured Lil Boi of Geeks. It’s basically about a “some”. It should basically sum (accidental pun haha…) that up for you.

The “some” trope is a classic trope in webtoons/manhwa and dramas. I mean, it’s realistic and relatable. I’m sure we’ve all had a “some” at least once. Usually in a webtoon/manhwa or drama there’s like a “some” with maybe 1-2 other characters. Bruh, Bunny has 5. 5 BISHIES. BISHIESSS. She’s living the dream. “…Minty…didn’t you [say] that you wouldn’t enjoy a drama/manhwa moment IRL…??” I said I didn’t enjoy living out that “being promised to your shitty childhood friend” trope. I also said bishies. I definitely said we want to be surrounded with bishies. I gladly welcome a sweet romance with a bishie like Park Seo Jun’s character in [What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?]. Being surrounded by bishies, heart-fluttering (I repeat heart-fluttering, not cringey) moments, and a sweet romance? Hell to the fucking yeah.

There is no shortage of bishies in this series. Bunny has FIVE! FIVE BISHIES MESSAGING HER. She’s basically got “some” going on with FIVE BISHIES. Wow. She’s living the dream. Home girl must’ve saved a freakin’ country or something to be blessed like that.

I can’t even get the attention of one dude. The rare occasions where a dude was interested in me…they all turned out to be creepy AF and/or asses. I legit once got stalked by some random dude who grabbed my arm and tried to drag me away. One of the first guys who asked me out also basically stalked me practically to the girl’s bathroom and locker room. Another dude was like a creepy weeb with some sort of Asian fetish…

Like it’s already crazy if someone were to get the attention of one or two bishes. To get the attention of 5 bishies at the same damn time? Un-freakin’-believable. Especially when there seems to be some really sweet and cute ones.

There are some extremely cute moments. Some were kind of corny. However, there were plenty of heart-fluttering moments! We got all sorts of bishies too! Basically every type of bishie (sans the dark bad boy type I guess).

First off, we have Yeol. He’s an industrial design student. He’s 24 and older than Bunny (21). He’s a third year so he’s a sunbae (Korean version of senpai/upperclassman). He’s in one of Bunny’s classes. He’s the outgoing, super friendly, and popular type. Honestly, he’s an observant and super nice dude. Although one could be wary of dudes that get alot of attention, especially if they’re super popular and friendly with other girls. Won doesn’t like or trust him though. Won thinks that Yeol looks like a fox and is sly like one. However, he does seem to be rather attentive to Bunny. I also do appreciate that he’s trying to get Bunny’s attention with his own effort. Although he’s somewhat calculating, he just wants Bunny to pay attention to him a bit more. It’s actually really cute. Minty says, “Yes, would call him oppa (*♡∀♡)” I shouldn’t even be calling them “oppa” cuz I’m older than all of them…but let me live my fangirl fantasies/spazzes for now lol…

My boy Won!~ He’s 25. He’s also an art and sculpting major like Bunny. So he’s also her sunbae. However, he’s a returning student (cuz Korean dudes have mandatory military service), so he’s a second year. So he’s been relying on Bunny for help due to her being good at what she does and the fact that she’s the professor’s favorite student. Won is also basically the best looking dude in their department. He’s actually pretty close to Bunny because since they spend so much time together. He considers himself her “close oppa” friend. He’s aware of Bunny’s situation and how she’s suddenly being contacted by all these bishies. He’s like her confidante and gives her advice. He seems to treat Bunny as a close hoobae/underclassman and dongsaeng/younger sibling. He’s trying to help her with her problem and only wants her to be with a good guy who meets his standards. He’s hella distrustful of the other guys, and doesn’t really approve of them. He especially doesn’t seem to like Yeol. Honestly, he does seem to really care about Bunny and thinks that she’s too good for the lot. Minty says, “Yes, would call him oppa (*♡∀♡)” Honestly, Won is probably like my ideal type out of the bishies. Responsible, patient, reliable, protective, and kind oppa who genuinely worries about you? He’s also handsome, stylish, easy to talk to, and understanding? Yes. He a dream oppa.

Next up is Hyun. He’s in the physical education department. He’s 23 and also a 2nd year as well. Being in the P.E. department, he’s the hella athletic and fit type. He’s also the awkward type. Dude is nice, but kind of dense, socially awkward, and doesn’t really have any tact. However, he instantly felt interested in Bunny when she was forced into an arm wrestling match between their departments. He’s got this awkward (yet cute) and naive kind of personality. Like he’s that dude who’s never paid attention to girls until now. He’s hot. A physically fine AF dude, but he’s not good at words or expressing himself. He also doesn’t really know how to act. He’s actually Bunny’s physically ideal type. However, his awkwardness makes Bunny kind of uncomfortable. Also…he’s just a big ol’ trap (see below). But ya know what? Minty says, “Yes, would call him oppa (*♡∀♡)” He’s socially awkward, but he’s cute and has good/sweet intentions. As a fellow socially awkward person, I get it. It would just be kind of hard to understand him is all. However, he does seem sweet and caring. Plus…did I mention abs??

Now we got Kyung! He’s a second year. He’s 22 years old and in the electrical engineering department. He met Bunny in the library and well…stuff happened that led to her accidentally breaking his glasses. He’s that nerdy, shy, kinda quiet kid with glasses. He looked normal, but Bunny realized he was hot after he took off his glasses. So the unexpected bishie type. He seems like a nice dude. Although, to be honest…we haven’t seen much from him yet. Minty says, “Might call him oppa (*♡∀♡)” He seemed nice enough, but like I said…we don’t know much about him yet.

Next up is Rang. He’s the only one who doesn’t go to the same university as Bunny. He’s 22 years old and in the business administration department at Minguk University. He hit on Bunny while she was waiting at a bus stop. He said something like, “It was love at first sight!” He’s that outgoing type that’s constantly expressing himself and his interests. At first Bunny left him on and read and didn’t respond to his constant messaging. She just wasn’t sure if she could trust him, and if she could deal with him. Won calls this dude “Nose”, cuz he suspects he got his nose done. He doesn’t really trust this guy either. Bunny does end up hanging out with him and feels like he’s a fun and friendly kind of person though. He’s the type that seems very expressive and forward. You thought I’d just be like “Yes oppa“, didn’t you? Surprise, I’m gonna say “No, not oppa“. I just don’t trust him. He seems pretty sus. Also, just not my type. I don’t like overly flirty types like that. He just screams player to me. To be honest, I don’t like the types who will constantly pester a girl. That shit is really annoying and scary to me. It’s also not cool to pressure people like that. Been through that, had friends and my little sis went through it. It’s just not it bruh.

Bishies aren’t the only draw of this series. So much fan service. Guess what y’all? Abs. It has lots of abs. So yes, I once again dragged Jess (Loha’s Jess) and K-Drama Circle in with abs.

Honestly, this series is a fucking trap. It’s so bad for my heart. Like the guys be cute, and I’m a sucker for all those sweet moments. Thank you for reminding how forever alone I am. There’s quite alot of fan service. Yet, I’m always thrown off every single time. Like I’m just sitting here trying to enjoy a webtoon and then BAM. Abs. Hella muscles and abs in my face. Also just hella sweet shit that I wish would happen IRL. But the fan service with all the muscles, abs, and hella fan service…that’s just…it should be illegal…*[sings BTS’ Dimple “…illegal~ No, it’s dangerous~ Oh yes~”]* (｡T ω T｡)

Seriously though…this webtoon. I get attacked with bishies and abs nonstop. Then you got all these cute scenarios happening. Like it’s a webtoon where it’s like unbelievably K-Drama-esque shit that wouldn’t happen in real life, but kinda can happen in real life…so it’s kinda realistic in that I can kinda see this shit happening in real life.

Honestly, I do like this webtoon. Like yeah, there are hella bishies everywhere. Some of them are absolutely cute. The series is just so funny and relatable too. Bunny makes it enjoyable too. She’s got some really funny fantasies. Like I find her really cute, down to earth, and hella relatable. Cuz homegirl is also like “WTF?? This can’t be real? WTF is this happening? This just seems hella unbelievable…like a manhwa or some shit.” She’s actually funny cuz her and her friends call out the basic romance comic/drama tropes and shit on them alot haha. They call out when things are cringe too. Honestly, I hella relate to Bunny cuz I feel like we’ve got alot of similar aspects. Only real difference is I ain’t cute, and I ain’t surrounded by bishies.

I get her trauma and insecurity too though. Being betrayed or let down by someone you really cared about really sucks. It sucks to believe in someone, but be treated like a fool. I relate. I’m forever alone, but there was a time I kinda had a “some” going on. Yeah, that didn’t end well though. It kinda traumatized me like Bunny. So I relate to that whole being cautious/suspicious and not wanting to follow your heart or jump into something aspect. Like her ex was shit. He seemed nice at first, and would act nice. However, the reality was that he leeched off of her, shamed her for enjoying herself, shamed her for what to eat, kept her from making friends, tried to change her to be what he wanted, treated her like a fool, and talked shit about her to his friends. So I understand why a part of her keeps trying to deny what’s happening. I understand she’s hella reluctant to start something and end up like a CC (campus couple – a college couple that ends up being pretty recognized on campus) again. It’s affected Bunny to the point that she doesn’t want to make a move unless she’s certain the other party likes her. She wants to be told upfront that they like her first. Which I get.

Still. This series has been really fun. I love the bishies. I love seeing Bunny struggle with the bishies. I’m not gonna lie, I’m fucking jelly. It’s rare for a guy to be interested in me. Even then, it’s like creepy old guys and/or assholes. I wish I had one sweet bishie be interested in me. This girl be livin’ the dream~ It’s not creepy if the guys are actually sweet, kind, AND cute! Plus abs….

I know, this review post is a bit different from my usual manga review posts. Honestly, I just like how the premise is super simple. I like that it’s something that does seem like it could happen in real life. Even if it seems absurdly impossible to have the attention of 5 bishies at the same time. I relate to Bunny and her friends. It honestly reminds me of me and my gal friends hanging out or K-Drama Circle chats. I also like how the series does both fangirling and taking jabs at the typical romance tropes in comics and dramas. It’s just super funny and hella relatable. It would really make an interesting K-Drama. I’d definitely watch it if they ever decided to do a live action adaptation. Honestly, I hope you give this a try if you’re into romantic comedies or K-Dramas. It’s unexpectedly fun, and rather cute. Have you read this series before? What do you think? BLACK LIVES MATTER

This is a difficult, but necessary matter to address. I’m not good at putting things into words, so I apologize. We all know the matter regarding the unjust murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. The current Black Lives Matter protests are being covered globally. I’ve even seen it being covered daily by the Thai news. Racism is a very real thing. Being Asian, I’ve personally encountered bullshit racism on a daily basis. So I can relate and understand the struggles. However, I’m also aware of how much more difficult and blatant it is for black POC. AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation. Make sure to have those conversations. Aside from donating, I had several conversations with my family. I explained things to my parents, especially since some news stories were being reported inaccurately. I was afraid it’d be a bit difficult. However, as fellow POC and human beings, it was a necessary conversation. My parents and grandma understand, and now stand on the same page regarding BLM as well. Please remember to be an active supporter, be it through donations, sharing information, and/or conversations and speaking up.
