Hello, my BAYOG luvlies!~ I’m popping in again with a quick webtoon recommendation post! Y’all know I am BAYOG’s Manhwa/Webtoon Trash Queen. I love manhwa and K-novels, and I honestly read waaaaayyyyyyyyy too much. Y’all know I love my romance/fantasy/isekai series. Admittedly though, they tend to feel pretty similar after a while. They usually follow the same kind of tropes and plots. Still, I find them enjoyable. However, I found a new favorite series that just came out at the beginning of this month. It’s called, 내 동생 건들면 너희는 다 죽은 목숨이다 /Touch My Little Brother and You’re Dead. For the first time, I found a series that is constantly surprising me. I kid you not, it’s really different. It honestly has me screaming, “Wuht?? WTF??? WTF, just happened???” But I’m also crying and just wheezing cuz of how hard I’m laughing. It’s such a funny series. It’s a new BAYOG favorite! Bruh! I even got Nick ( @rokutsu ) into it! Shocking! Anyway, let’s get into it!

내 동생 건들면 너희는 다 죽은 목숨이다/Touch My Little Brother and You’re Dead was originally a [novel on Kakao] by 몰포/Morpho. It was first published on November 24, 2019. The manhwa/webtoon adaptation is by 몰포/Morpho and 철무장미/Cheolmuljangmi(CMJM), with the art by 웹작툰가/TOONGA. The adaptation is also published on [Kakao]. The manhwa/webtoon was released July 1, 2021. The official English version will be released by Tappytoon on July 28.

Synopsis (I’m including 2 versions for a better idea of context):

One day, I woke up as Rosalite, the older sister of Asterion in the novel, “Asterion of the Twilight.” I may not be the main character, but it’s not so bad. Rosalite’s little brother, though, is fated to die in the story at 18 and that just seems really unfair after all the drama he’s been through (did I mention his story is a BL?). Now that I’m Rosalite, I decide to save him. But no matter how hard I try, he just keeps dying and every time he dies, I turn back into 16-year-old Rosalite. Ten or so deaths later, I’m more determined than ever to save him. Rich, royal, or sexy foreigner: whoever touches my little brother will die!

I became sixteen year old Rosalite.

She fell out of bed and when she opened her eyes, she had possessed a character in “Asterion of a Blue Starry Night” a cliche BL novel with passion, fantasy, drama, and angst.

Plus, she was Rosalite, the older sister of Asteron. Asteron was the protagonist and the one who committed suicide at the end of the novel. She left herself to go through the flow of events in the story. At the end of that, she went back in time to become sixteen year old Rosalite again. She thought that standing by was what she did wrong, so she raised her younger sibling finely, but she died from an outside force and returned as Rosalite once more. She changed her direction. She indulged in training herself instead of her brother. That didn’t seem to work either. She had learned magic but still returned, and she had lived all the way till her graduation, but still returned.

Rosalite Roxburgh who is always returning to her sixteen year old self, is still looking for a way to die indefinitely.

Y’all. Please do yourself a favor and read this LOLOL. It’s so funny. Like honestly, I wasn’t really expecting that much. I just thought it’d be like the usual fun romantic/fantasy/isekai series. So I added it to my reading list but hadn’t really prioritized it. Since my reading list is so massive, it took me like 2-3 weeks to finally get around to reading it. Lyla (one of our readers and basically my BAYOG Discord twin) told me I would absolutely love it. Lyla is basically my twin, and she was right haha. I thought I’d just start reading a couple of chapters before I went to bed. I was laughing so hard and basically wheezing in the dark at 3 AM. I also ended up binge reading a bunch of chapters until like 5 AM. This is probably the funniest manhwa series I’ve ever read. It honestly ended up being so different from my expectations, and I think it’s a very unique and hilarious series. Now I’m trying to get all of the BAYOG Crew to read it. I even got Nick to read it, and he loves it. Nick doesn’t really read manhwa series. We both rarely get into the same series too. So it’s honestly super rare. I’m pretty sure we can officially say it’s a BAYOG favorite. Nick and I are trying to get the rest of the BAYOG Crew into it, with plans to hopefully doing a BAYOG Podcast episode on it soon~

Anyway, the appeal of this series is how it’s surprisingly very different from typical romance/fantasy/isekai series. It’ll also constantly surprise you. Y’ALL. I thought I knew where it was going. Nope. So many curveballs, but in the best way! Honestly, it’s hellaaa fast-paced. Especially when it comes to comedy. But again, it’s in a good way. It’s surprising and refreshing. The type of comedy it uses and how it’s executed is really enjoyable for me. It literally had me yelling, “WTF?? What just happened?? IDK what happened, but LOLOLOL I’M WHEEZINGGGG” When I thought it couldn’t get any funnier, I found myself laughing harder at a new gag. It’s also just funny because it doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s a refreshing series, especially when I compare it to my many other series which can be darker, heavier, and have more angst goin’ on. You have a bunch of eccentric (like HELLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA eccentric) characters, with unique personalities. They’re all just completely ridiculous, with ridiculous actions and reactions. It’s also just fun because it’s a series that seems to break the fourth wall at times too.

I love the female lead. Rosalite is basically psycho. I don’t blame her though. She’s been forced to die and relive her life so many times, that she’s basically lost it. It’s actually pretty sad and heartbreaking. But it’s also funny cuz her personality is just so unique. Honestly, she’s like insane now, but she’s actually a really smart and witty character. She definitely stands out from our typical manhwa female leads. She’s also blunt, cusses ALOT, and has a very mischievous side. I also love the teamwork and relationship between her and Aster, her knight. Aster and her whole family is just chaotic and hilarious energy. Rosalite’s relationship with her father, as well as Aster’s relationship with her father (the Duke’s knight) and brothers are just crazy, dangerous, but also hilarious. Also, I think it’s hilarious how Rosalite’s dad just nonchalantly okays an execution lolol

The art is also actually really great. I give it a solid A. I also appreciate the sudden change of art style for the gags and meme-worthy moments. It’s like they purposely do it in a more “basic” and “ugly” (?… compared to how it normally looks) style. But it works because it works with the comedy and direction of the story. Plus, it’s just really funny. The art is actually what interested Nick when me and Lyla were talking about it in the BAYOG Discord server.

The story is actually a lot of fun. At glace, it would seem like your basic romantic/fantasy/isekai series. But the twists, eccentric characters, and comedy really sets it apart. I’ve read series that had pretty funny comedy to it, but not to this level. It’s like the premise of the story would seem dark, but the comedy makes it so ridiculous that you kind of forget that that kind of drama is pretty dark. Yet at the same time, you laugh really hard because of the ridiculous comedy, but only for them to suddenly kind of remind you of how messed up the situation can be. Like I remember thinking the first 2 episodes were hilarious. Then towards the end of chapter 2, Roselite has her breakdown after living and dying dozens of times and realizing she can never get peace. It was actually pretty heartbreaking. But then they just suddenly go back to comedy again haha. It’s a constant whiplash of ridiculousness on crack, to these pretty dark moments. But it’s executed so well with all the various elements, that it’s just alot of fun to read. I also just appreciate the little details in the series. Like we’ve been going back to re-read it because we notice the little things in the background of the panels.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this series. Especially if you’re looking for something different from the typical romance/fantasy/isekai manhwa series. It’s unexpectedly so much fun to read, and it’s super hilarious. I haven’t laughed this hard over a series since when I first read Concubine Contract last year. But this one is on another level. Just when I think I’m done laughing at a gag, there’s a new gag that’s even more ridiculous and has me laughing even harder. It’s also just been super fun to enjoy and discuss on the BAYOG Discord server. Like I said, Nick and I only occasionally get into the same series. Because I’m usually more into my romance fantasy series or my sweet and fluffy romance series. It was actually pretty unexpected to see Nick get into it. But I’m really glad. We’ve had fun talking about it, and I’m excited to get the rest of the crew into it. Nick and I plan on doing a BAYOG podcast episode discussing the series with the crew. So look forward to that! Honestly, I love this series so much already. I love the comedy, but I also love that it doesn’t feel childishly silly. It still has the right levels of drama. I actually wished the novel was in English, cuz I would definitely read it as well. I’m curious to see how it differs, and whether it’s just as crazy as the manhwa adaptation.

As an Asian-American, racism, xenophobia, and hate crimes against AAPI isn’t new. It’s always been around. Unfortunately, misinformation and the pandemic has caused an insane surge in racism and xenophobia. There has also been an insane rise in hate crimes. More recently, we’re seeing a surge of hate crimes against the Asian elderly. Particularly in the California and New York areas. Some cases even leading to injuries and even death. The sad thing is that many cases do not get alot of attention, or are just looked passed. It breaks my heart and is cause for concern since it affects our community. Since some of the BAYOG Crew (including myself) are Asian-Americans ourselves, I wanted to use our small platform to help in anyway. Hate, racism, and xenophobia is an ugly thing. We’re friends, in the same community, and against the same social injustices. So be kind and let’s fight these things together.
