Music Monday|WINNER— AH YEAH

Hello lovely people! Y’all know Monday means another Music Monday post! I’m continuing with our summer jams theme. We’ve had alot of fun checking out several different tracks that were perfect for summer. You can check out those previous Music Monday posts [here]. Today’s Music Monday post is going to be on Winner’s “AH YEAH”~

WINNER (위너) is a boy group under YG Entertainment. To be honest, I don’t know much about them. When I first got into K-Pop around the beginning of the 2000’s, I first got into YG Entertainment artists. I was a huge fan of 1TYM, Se7en, JinuSean, Wheesung, and Gummy. I also stanned BIGBANG and 2NE1 since before their debuts. As y’all know, I started falling out of the K-Pop mainstream loop around 2014-ish. I slowly kind of stopped following YG Entertainment artists, especially with the recent scandals. I’ll still listen to some songs though. So I’ll listen to a couple of their tracks, but I’m clueless as to any other info really. I’m more familiar with Blackpink than I am with WINNER or iKON. All I really know is that they debuted in 2014. They originally debuted with 5 members. However the current lineup consists of 4 members: JinWoo, SeungHoon, Mino, and SeungYoon. I’m only somewhat familiar with Mino. I know he was on the rap competition Show Me the Money (Season 4). I recognize him from being featured in some other artists’ tracks/mvs. The one I recognize him from most would be Epik High’s [Born Hater]. Which he was featured alongside with label-mates Bobby and B.I from iKON.

I think “아예(AH YEAH)” is probably one of my favorite tracks that I’ve heard from WINNER. It’s a summer bop. The song sounds upbeat and fun. The MV is super bright and colorful. The choreo also looks super fun. However, this is actually a break-up song! It’s rather bitter sweet? The song is about ending things with their lover, and making a promise to clearly cut things between them. After all, if you take love out of the equation, all that’s left are two strangers. They talk about how they’re happy to have more freedom and time. They say that they don’t care anymore, even if she’s to cry blood. They don’t care if they seem harsh or seem like trash. They’ve made their minds to end things clearly. However, it’s clear that they’re not as happy to end things as they appear to be. They admit that the truth is, they don’t want their relationship to be like an open ending in a movie. They don’t want to be left in tears, so it’s best to just clearly cut things off. They then end the song stating that, “It’s over.” So yeah, it’s kind of sad. However, the song is still a bop. Plus, the choreo looks fun.

The MV is super bright and colorful. It looks hella fun too. It seems super cute. However, in a way it also translates a part of the song. It shows how they’re trying to be find with breaking up. As if they’re refusing to be sad. They’re trying to show, “I’m totally fine, even without you.” However, the end shows that despite everything, there’s still this sense of loss and regret. It’s almost like the fun and upbeat attitude is a pretense of being unaffected. It’s like you’re happy and accepted that it’s over. However, there’s still going to be a part of you that’s sad about it. Which is true in real relationships. Things can end. Sometimes they end badly. Sometimes you’re truly happy it’s over. However, it’s also a fact that you’ve spent alot of time, energy, and memories with that other person. You can see that in how, although it’s still colorful, it ends with the members in a more subdued lighting. They’re no longer smiling, and they look exhausted.

I just really, really love the choreo. Honestly, it’s how I first found and fell in love with the song. I actually found the song through a random dance cover vid, as well as one of those random dance play vids. The choreo is really cute and fun. Even if this is a break up song. I love Mino’s little broken pinky promise part at the beginning. However, the choreo for the chorus is definitely my ultimate favorite part. The pulling back and forth at the “AH YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH” is so simple and fun. However, I just love how the choreo translates the lyrics so well. From the pinkies for promises, to show how they’re promising to not even be friends anymore. To how they’re basically throwing away their relationship and any promises they’ve made to each other during their relationship. Then signaling their farewell to everything. It’s cute and matches the song’s lyrics and fun and upbeat nature as well.

Anyway, that was WINNER’s “아예(AH YEAH)”. That’s your summer break-up song that’s still kind of fun. It’s bittersweet, but it’s still a bop. Honestly, WINNER has several summer bops that have that tropical house vibe. Still, this one is probably my favorite in both sound and choreo. What did y’all think? AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation. Make sure to have those conversations. Aside from donating, I had several conversations with my family. I explained things to my parents, especially since some news stories were being reported inaccurately. I was afraid it’d be a bit difficult. However, as fellow BIPOC and human beings, it was a necessary conversation. My parents and grandma understand, and now stand on the same page regarding BLM as well. Please remember to be an active supporter, be it through donations, sharing information, and/or conversations and speaking up.
