Music Monday | EPIK HIGH — 비 오는 날 듣기 좋은 노래(Rain Song) (Feat. Colde)

Hello my BAYOG luvlies!~ It’s yo’ girl back at it with another Music Monday recommendation!~ As y’all know, I’ve been following a theme of chill songs that go well on our Autumn edition of Music Monday. Today’s song recommendation is a song by one of my all-time favorite artists, and features a couple more artists that I love~ EPIK HIGH. We talkin’ about EPIK HIGH and their song “비 오는 날 듣기 좋은 노래(Rain Song)” that features Colde, one of my favorite K-R&B artists. There’s also an uncredited cameo in the track from Younha, one of my favorite female soloists.

Epik High (에픽하이) is a group of musicians, consisting of 2 rappers and a DJ. They’re Tablo, Mithra Jin, and DJ Tukutz. They of course write and produce all their own music as well. They formed in 2001 over a bowl of pho, and officially debuted in 2003. They’re one of my all-time fave musicians. If you’re not new to BAYOG, I’m sure you all remember me posting about them several times. I just love that it’s not just music, but it truly is a craft and art. Also, best concert ever. I won’t go into their bio again, since I’ve already covered it in my previous Music Monday post with [“Fan”]. Also because I could go on and on about Epik High for hours~ Their whole discography is solid. Definitely recommend checking out their music, as well as Tablo’s solo projects. I recommend all of Tablo’s solos. As for Epik High albums, my faves would be: [sleepless in ________], [We’ve Done Something Wonderful], [신발장 (Shoebox)], [Remapping the Human Soul], [Black Swan Songs], and [Epik High Is Here 上 (Part 1)].

This track also features Colde (콜드), an indie/KRNB/K-Hip Hop rapper, singer-songwriter, and producer. Kim Hee Soo (김희수) is most known by his stage name Colde. He is also a member of the indie contemporary R&B duo [offonoff(오프온오프)] with DJ and producer 0Channel (also known as EOH). It was formed in 2015. They debuted in 2016 under the label HIGHGRND, which was an independent sub-label under YG Entertainment. It was headed by Tablo of Epik High. However, Tablo did resign as CEO, and was considered to no longer be active. As of 2018, Colde has since released music as a solo artist. Although, offonoff has never announced to be have disbanded. He’s currently under the label WAVY (웨이비), which he founded in 2018. Colde is also considered to be a part of the [Club Eskimo] crew, which includes various artists and producers in the KRNB/KHH community such as [Dean], [Crush], [Millic], [punchnello], [MISO], [2xxx!], [Rad Museum], and more. Colde’s also collabed and written songs for other popular artists as well. This include’s Baekhyun(EXO)’s [“Love Again”] and [“Love Scene”]. You can also find clips of Colde performing [“Love Again”] and [“Love Scene”]. I honestly have so many favorite songs with Colde. My favorites from the offonoff discography would be [“Photograph”], [“춤 (Dance)”], and [“Cigarette (Feat. Miso)”]. Honestly, the whole [boy. album] is really good. It’s probably one of my all-time favorite albums and most frequently listened to ones as well. As for his solo songs, my favorites would include [“Your Dog Loves You”], [“WA-R-R” (와르르 ♥)”], [“미술관에서 (The Museum)”], [“없어도 돼 (You Don’t Need My Love?)”], [“또 새벽이 오면 (When the Dawn Comes Again) (Feat. Baekhyun (EXO))”], [“Dream”], and [“Blue Candle”]. Honestly, is whole [Love Part 1 album] is a really solid album. As a bonus, check out this live version of [“WA-R-R” (와르르 ♥)”]~ Honestly, I think Colde is such an amazing artist, and I always love the chill vibe of his voice and his music. This track also has a surprise uncredited cameo from Younha (윤하). Go Younha (고윤하) is a solo singer-songwriter and produer that’s been active since 2004. She actually began her career in Japan and had a successful career before making her debut in South Korea in 2006. Anime fans should recognize her for being the singer of [“ほうき星/Houkoboshi (Comet)”], the [third ending for Bleach]. She’s also a close friend of Epik High, and has frequently worked with them. Their most famous collaboration would be Epik High’s [“우산 (Umbrella)”]. She released her own [solo version] of the track in 2014. Younha has also been featured on Epik High’s [“또 싸워 (We Fight Ourselves)”]. Epik High’s Tablo has also been featured in her song [“기억 Rap Mix Version”]. Aside from those official tracks, they’ve also frequently [performed together] [on stage] and at their concerts. Some of my personal favorite tracks from Younha (aside from “Umbrella” and “Comet”) would be her [“Walking In The Rain (With Chancellor)”], [“Parade”], [“Airplane Mode”], [“Winter Flower(雪中梅) (Feat. RM (BTS))”], [“빗소리“], and [“비밀번호 486 (Password 486)”].

Epik High dropped this single featuring Colde back in June 2021. It’s a K-R&B and rap track. It is a mellow-ish track, but not as mellow and soft as our previous Autumn Music Monday tracks. It’s a bit more upbeat sounding beat, but still a melancholy kind of track. So totally befitting of the title. The English title is “Rain Song”, while the Korean title translates to “A Good Song to Listen to on a Rainy Day”. Because of the rain theme, it reminds alot of Epik High fans of [‘우산 (Umbrella)’]. They sound totally different but carry similar-ish vibes. It’s a bittersweet and melancholy track about missing listening to sad music while missing someone on a rainy day. It’s a track to listen to on a rainy day when you’re down in your feels. There’s also a slight reference in the lyrics to “Umbrella” as well. On a side note, I’m pretty sure the album cover is by the same artist that did their [sleepless in ________ album] cover. I just love this track a lot. From the rapping, to Colde’s mellow and melancholic voice, to Younha’s sweet and melancholy cameo in the bridge.

The music video is aesthetically pleasing. It goes back and forth different scenes of rain in the city, and then to Epik High and Colde singing. It’s simple, but has a nice aesthetic and really fits the song. Again, this is a sad love song. It’s about listening to a sad song on a rainy day and missing a past love. It’s basically relatable in that sometimes you don’t really think about something until you’re reminded of it by the rain and songs made for rainy days. In that moment you look back and miss it. However, once the rain stops, we also forget about it once again. I’m pretty sure the English subs of the song were actually translated by Tablo himself.
