Music Monday| Autumn Breeze

Hello BAYOG~ It’s been a while~ I’m sure y’all have noticed I haven’t really been posting for a while. As I said in my [latest podcast post], I kinda unintentionally took a break due to burnout and other stuff. I think I’m in a much better state now though. So you can expect me to resume posting content again~ Although, I admit that I’ll be making a gradual return before getting back to my usual groove of things. Anyway, I’m starting off my return with a simple Music Monday post! Since it’s autumn, I’m going to be doing an autumn edition of Music Monday. I’ll be starting it off with “Autumn Breeze”. This track is originally by the producer JIDA and features the vocals of Rachel Lim. However, there was a revamped version that was released earlier this year, and it features the vocals of the famous Korean R&B diva Gummy.

Honestly, I have no information on JIDA. All I know is that they’re a Korean producer. I first stumbled upon his music back in 2016-2017. Yes, it was the song “Autumn Breeze”. I can tell y’all about Gummy (거미) though. Her real name is Park Ji Yeon (박지연). She’s a singer that’s been active since 2003. She’s known for styles in R&B and soul. Which makes sense considering how she originally debuted under YG Entertainment. Yes, she’s part of the original YG Family. That was back when YG was known for it’s hip-hop, R&B, and soul style and sound. Whether it’s soulful ballads or upbeat R&B tracks, she always kills it. She’s known as having one of the best vocals in the Korean music industry. I believe she also oversaw a bit of vocal training for some of the artists from YG Entertainment? Don’t quote me on that though. Cuz I’m not sure if I’m remembering it wrong or not. Anyway, she first gained success and recognition with her track [“기억상실 (Memory Loss)”]. One of my top favorites by Gummy will always be [“미안해요(Sorry)”] which features T.O.P. of BIGBANG. The MV also stars T.O.P. and Dara of 2NE1. She’s also basically a soundtrack queen. She’s always singing hit soundtrack titles for big dramas. The most famous and recognizable one would be [“You Are My Everything”] from the Descendants of the Sun (태양의 후예) drama. Also, fun fact: she’s married to actor Jo Jung Suk. Recent K-Drama fans should recognize him from [Hospital Playlist]. And as another bonus, I’m going to recommend another oldie that I like: [“어른아이 (Childish Adult)”].

Anyway, as I said, “Autumn Breeze” is originally by the producer JIDA and features the vocals of Rachel Lim (whom I also had no information on). The track itself was originally released back in October 2016. It was then also released on JIDA’s first EP, Fade Away back in August 2017. All the tracks on the EP featured Rachel Lim’s vocals and they were all in English. The lyrics are basically about a bittersweet love. There are actually 2 versions of “Autumn Breeze” on the EP: the original “Autumn Breeze” and “autumn breeze (london)”. The original is an R&B type of track that has a dreamy vibe to it. It also has a bit more going on with the track. To me, it has a bit of a bittersweet, yet playful feel to it. The london version is much more simple and softer. It has ambient sounds of being on a train or subway. The whole track is just the piano and Rachel’s vocals. It’s slower and softer. There’s a slight lo-fi effect on the vocals, which adds to its dreamy feeling. Its kind of slightly different kind of dreamy vibe than the original. I’d say this one kind of feels like reminiscing a somewhat bittersweet dream or memory that’s gone and a bit out of reach. I do like both versions, but I think I prefer the london version. I just really love the simplicity and that soft, dreamy, and somewhat airy vibe it has. Anyway, the track was revamped for the re;code project. It’s a music project where older songs are revamped and sung by different artists. “Autumn Breeze” was released as episode VII of the re;code project. It has a kind of chill-hop, jazzy vibe to it with Gummy’s soulful vocals. I really love this version. It sounds kind of like a track you could hear in a lounge. This version of the track is pretty interesting to me. I love chill-hop, and I absolutely love the jazzy touches in this version. It still has that dreamy feel to it, but it also makes it feel and sound really classy. But yeah, I’d say JIDA’s london version and Gummy’s version are my favorites out of the 3.
