Music Monday | Luli Lee — About Summer

It’s Monday y’all! Y’all know what that means~ Time for another Music Monday. Not gonna lie… I’ve been hella swamped and also sick this week. I’m a little overwhelmed, but tryin’ my best… So today, I’m keeping it super short and simple (even by my standards). I honestly felt bad I didn’t really get to properly stick with my Summer Music Monday posts… After all, there are just so many great summer tracks. So I’m gonna officially end the 2021 summer edition of Music Monday next week~ Anyway, I’ve been thinking about how I wanted to highlight more tracks that might not be as well known. I know we all love our K-Pop, particularly the mainstream tracks and artists. But I thought I’d show some love to the K-Indie scene today~ So today’s track is the mellow and retro-esque ‘About Summer’ by Luli Lee.

Luli Lee (이루리), also known by the name Lulileela, is a K-Indie singer-songwriter and producer. She made her debut back in January 7, 2011 as the female vocalist and bassist of the band [Bye Bye Badman]. In 2016, she also joined another band called [Seoulmoon]. She also formed the duo [LEEXLEE] with Neowa ( 이성경/Lee Seong Gyeong) in 2017. She also formed another duo in 2018 called [Lower] with LENI. She finally made her debut as a soloist in January 2018 with the release of her first EP, Rise From the Ashes. I discovered her music randomly (as I usually do) several months ago. I love my mainstream K-Pop jams, and we all know I absolutely love my K-RNB and Hip-Hop. However, I also do enjoy indie tracks every now and then. They’re hidden gems. I’ll usually go check out [Genie Music] to see what new indie tracks are out. At that time, I ended up discovering Luli Lee’s [‘I Feel Your Love’]. I really loved how mellow her music sounded, and I also really loved the retro-esque vibes to it.

‘About Summer’ is a recent release y’all. It literally just dropped September 9, 2021. It’s an indie rock track with a mellow and retro vibe to it. I’d say it has this 80’s-esque kinda sound to it. Especially with the percussion elements, bass, and synths (?). Look, I’m not an expert in music so I’m not really all that sure on how to describe it accurately. All I know is, I like this track. I love the chill vibe it has. Luli Lee’s mellow vocals also help give it such a laidback vibe too. That chill, retro-esque sound and her laidback vocals is what gives me mellow summer vibes. It’s just like pretty laid back, and I can envision listening to this while driving along the beach, and watching the sunset.

The music video just shows Luli Lee performing the song on a rooftop on a clear day. The cityscape peeks through the background and you see the background/lighting changes as the sun starts to set. As for lyrics… I am not 100% sure on the translations. However, based on my hella basic ass Koreaboo Korean… I’m pretty sure it’s like a love song and she’s singing of a summer love, or a love that started during the summer. I think I heard her singing something like, “Let’s start again”. So I guess she wants to start this summer love again… or something to that extent. All I know is this song has longing vibes to it.

AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We are all too familiar with the racism that we, our friends, and family have faced on a daily basis. Every life is precious. However, as BIPOC, we also recognize that black people are a group of people that face extreme racism and at a higher risk for their safety. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation and understanding. STOP ASIAN HATE

As an Asian-American, racism, xenophobia, and hate crimes against AAPI isn’t new. It’s always been around. Unfortunately, misinformation and the pandemic has caused an insane surge in racism and xenophobia. There has also been an insane rise in hate crimes. More recently, we’re seeing a surge of hate crimes against the Asian elderly. Particularly in the California and New York areas. Some cases even leading to injuries and even death. The sad thing is that many cases do not get alot of attention, or are just looked passed. It breaks my heart and is cause for concern since it affects our community. Since some of the BAYOG Crew (including myself) are Asian-Americans ourselves, I wanted to use our small platform to help in anyway. Hate, racism, and xenophobia is an ugly thing. We’re friends, in the same community, and against the same social injustices. So be kind and let’s fight these things together.
