The tracks for this post are “skeletons” by keshi, “Take It One Day At A Time” by Jennifer Chung, “Waves” by Jhameel, “Hold On” by David Choi, and “Brighter Days” by Clara C (who I believe goes just by Clara now). Several of these tracks hit close to home for me, and helped me through some tough times of my own. There are plenty of well known Asian-American artists in the K-Pop scene, J-Pop scene, and Asian music scene in general. Some have even embarked on careers outside of Asia, such as Tiffany Young (Tiffany of Girls’ Generation), Amber Liu (formerly of f(x)), eaJ (Jae of DAY6), Mark Tuan (Mark of GOT7), Utada Hikaru, etc. They’re all great artists. However, I wanted to focus on Asian-American artists who are based in the US. Of course, the artists I chose aren’t completely random. They do have some ties to the the industry in Asia as well. Some of them were already pretty well known in the US or through the internet, but had tried out competing on singing competitions in Asia. Some have also contributed to Asian drama soundtracks as well.

Asian Representation Matters Happy Aapi Heritage Month GIF - AsianRepresentationMatters AsianRepresentation HappyAapiHeritageMonth GIFs

There’s another reason why I chose Asian-American artists who became well-known from internet platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud. These days, everyone is pretty familiar with K-Pop, Asian dramas, manga, webtoons, anime, etc. We’ve heard K-Pop songs playing in mainstream media in the US from radio and TV shows. It’s really amazing. 10-15 years ago, all these things were a niche. Alot of people didn’t see them favorably, and people who liked them would get bullied. For Asian-Americans like me, we didn’t have alot of representation in the media at all. We were constantly told Asians weren’t in demand, and that they couldn’t be popular or sell at all. So it’s really amazing that we’ve come so far today. However, back in my day…10-15 years ago, we didn’t see alot of people like us in music, television, or movies. YouTube was new, but growing back then. It honestly opened alot of doors for Asian-Americans. It gave Asian-Americans a platform to showcase their talents, and it showed that Asian-American talent IS well-received and wanted. So even though it was like another niche, we were able to get some representation. We were also able to have AAPI issues addressed. I honestly give a big chunk of credit to YouTube for discrediting those old school claims and misconceptions, by showing the demand, popularity, and profitability of Asian talent. It also really did help globalize Asian media in general, and really having a hand in it’s growing demand and popularity. Thus, here we are. We’ve come a long way with the growing acceptance and representation of Asian talent in mainstream western media. We’re also made progress in fixing misconceptions and ignorance. Because let me make it clear once again, representation matters! However, there’s still alot of progress to be made. That being said though, I’m really proud that we’ve made progress. Also, I just want to say I legit called it in one of my college papers like a decade ago, right before BTS debut too haha.

keshi | skeletons

keshi, real name Casey Luong, is a Vietnamese-American singer, songwriter, and producer. He became famous for his lo-fi tracks on SoundCloud. I’d say he’s probably one of the current most popular and well-known Asian-American artists right now. Y’all probably might’ve heard some of his tracks online. I’ve also previously mentioned him before as well. He’s previously contributed his strat on [“It Just Is”] by eaJ x Seori. He also released the song [“pillows”] with eaJ. Of course, y’all should remember that eaJ is none other than Jae of the K-Pop band DAY6 and one of the hosts from DIVE Studio’s [How Did We Get Here?]. Seori is also a female soloist in the Krnb scene.

As for the song “skeletons”, I honestly really relate to this one. I was in a time where I was under alot of stress. For me, I also kept alot of things to myself, especially when it concerned my mental health. Because mental health is such a taboo subject in Asian households and culture. I was stressed out about how I would be treated, and the things I would be told. Such as gaslighting and hearing more about how it would affect the reputation of my family… Ouch…yes… I was struggling pretty badly and felt like I was dead in side, just super sad, and unsure of myself. I just wanted to escape everything, to be honest. Of course, I’m okay now. However, it was cathartic to see my thoughts and emotions be so accurately described.

[Verse 1]
Stressed out
Feelin’ lost and I don’t know what to do now
What I chose ain’t really gonna work out
Fallin’ six feet underneath the floor now
Think I’m gonna tap out (Ooh-ahh, ooh-ahh)

[Pre-Chorus]
Feel bad, go to bed
Wake up even worse, yeah
So sad, in my head
Feelin’ like a curse
I need medicine, medicine, medicine

[Chorus]
All my skeletons out for the taking (Ooh-ahh)
Yeah, I don’t even know if I’ma make it
I’m afraid of myself and I hate it (Ooh-ahh)
All my skeletons out for the taking
Somebody take ’em

[Verse 2]
I wanna run away
The day to day is taking its toll on me
And I’m tearin’ at the seams (Ooh-ahh)
Throw it all away
Give a fuck about what they say
I gotta disagree
This ain’t really fun for me

[Pre-Chorus]
Feel bad, go to bed
Wake up even worse, yeah
So sad, in my head
Feelin’ like a curse
I need medicine, medicine, medicine

[Chorus]
All my skeletons out for the taking (Ooh-ahh)
Yeah, I don’t even know if I’ma make it
I’m afraid of myself and I hate it (Ooh-ahh)
All my skeletons out for the taking
Somebody take ’em

Jennifer Chung | Take It One Day at a Time

I’d say Jennifer Chung is another one of the OGs Asian-American YouTubers. She’s a Korean-American singer and songwriter. She’s also really sweet and down to earth. I had the pleasure of meeting her at an event by one of the Asian organizations at my university several years ago. She also appeared on a season of Superstar K, a famous singing competition show in Korea. I can’t find the clip anymore though, so I don’t remember if she only appeared on the audition or if she passed and appeared for a few episodes. However, I do remember that the judges were impressed, but felt like they couldn’t offer her any improvement or something like that.

I actually like both versions of the track, but the acoustic one is probably my favorite. I feel like it feels so much more emotional and raw in it’s acoustic version. This is one I don’t think I need to talk about to much because the lyrics speak for themselves. I only just recently discovered this track, and I really relate the lyrics. Because honestly, that’s exactly how it feels when you’re in your lows and when you’re in pain. Sometimes there’s a sense of hopelessness, bitterness, and sadness. But this song reminds us that we have to try to hold on, and just take it one day at a time. Another important message from this song is to not put our feelings aside, and that there is a process for healing. When things feel overwhelming, all we can do is take it a bit at a time.

I know it hurts
Don’t wanna get out of bed
Much rather lay there instead
Instead you face what you fear
The thought that no one is near

It hurts
You’re living but don’t feel alive
No motivation or drive
As you search for answers to why, oh why?

Why me?
Won’t somebody please
Take my burdens away
I can’t do this today

You’ve got to hold on
Hold on to what you believe in
Weather through every season
Take it one day at a time

You’ve got to hold on
Don’t put aside what you’re feeling
There is a process of healing
You will be more than alright
Take it one day at a time
So overwhelming
Everyone’s counting on you
Unaware you need help too
But you don’t say a word
Too much work to be done

No fun
Go through the motions eyes closed
‘Cause you’re always doing the most
The more that you do
The more that you seem to lose

Why me?
Won’t somebody please
Take my burdens away
I can’t do this today

You’ve got to hold on
Hold on to what you believe in
Weather through every season
Take it one day at a time

You’ve got to hold on
Don’t put aside what you’re feeling
There is a process of healing
You will be more than alright
Take it one day at a time
Time after time
I have tried hard to fight
Against all my desires
I would swallow my pride
But I know I am called to live free and fulfilled
No it will not be easy
But I will be still

I will be still
I will be still and know

You’ve got to hold on
Don’t put aside what you’re feeling
There is a process of healing
You will be more than alright
Take it one day at a time

Jennifer Chung | Take It One Day at a Time

Jennifer Chung | If Only

I put this other track from Jennifer Chung because I liked how it addresses insecurities and pressure one faces from people constantly scrutinizing you. Yet, it also describes one’s growth, the realization that you can’t always please everyone, and what’s important is yourself and not what others try to project on you. This is another one where I also preferred the acoustic version. I feel like it felt like it had some more raw emotion to it. It reminds me of the desperation we sometimes feel to fit the ideals others project on us, and the complexes we can develop. Yet, there’s a sweetness in growing and realizing your worth is up to you and your own happiness.

I honestly really felt this song. I got complexes of my own, and I’m honestly a very insecure gal. I often think things like how I’m not very pretty, talented, or “successful”. I’m an Asian gal on the heavier side too. So my weight has been one of my major complexes. I gain weight pretty easily, but it’s hella difficult to lose weight. Even with my changes in diet or increase in exercise. To be honest, I don’t even eat much. So my weight is constantly under scrutiny whenever I see relatives. I get called “elephant”, “pig”, “whale”, “manatee”, “hippo”, etc. Even in the times I did manage to lose alot of weight (mostly it was due to stress, overwork, and not being able to eat properly), I still came under alot of scrutiny and comments about my weight. There was a time I lost about 30-35 lbs in about 2-3 months. Rather than diet and exercise, it was again mostly from constant stress, overwork, and not being able to eat properly. I supposedly looked better, but felt awful. I was cranky and unhappy. Yet I was told, “You look good, keep up the good work.” Yeah, that didn’t make me feel good. I also legitimately got told, “You look so much better now. But you need to lose another 20-30 lbs if you want to look pretty.” I just learned people would never be satisfied. It didn’t matter if had put in alot of effort, or if it was affecting my mental health. Although, I have now learned to accept myself and love myself as I am more! I’m much happier now too. However, I do admit that I do still feel insecure and hurt at times.

They want it way more than you.
They would die trying, would you?
What are you willing to do?
Well, I just wanna be free.
Wanna be who I’m meant to be.
But then the voices keep telling me…

If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only.
If only.
If only you…

Now that I’m grown,
I’ve learned that there isn’t one way.
There is no turning away from your fate.
You are safe.
I’ll take my time – it’s a gift.
Make sure there’s nothing I missed.
This is the one life I’ll live.
I know that I can be free,
And be who I’m meant to be.
All while the voices are telling me…

If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…

Slimmer.
Prettier.
Thinner.
Taller.
Smarter.
Wiser.
Blah-lah-lah-lah

Slimmer.
Prettier.
Thinner.
Taller.
Smarter.
Wiser.
Blah-lah-lah-lah

They’ve got so much to say,
And yet so little to show.
No, I don’t mean accolades.
I mean the depths of your soul.

I’m doing what I do best.
I mean that I’m doing me.
That’s what I mean when I say,
I just wanna be free.

If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…
If only you were…

Jhameel | Waves

Jhameel, or Jhameel Kim, is in indie artist of Korean and Mongolian (and Japanese too… I think) descent. I discovered him from his [drunk YouTube] covers years ago. He’s really quirky. He’s a super chill and down-to-earth guy too. Dude is multi-lingual as well! I believe he speaks: English, Korean, Arabic, Spanish, some Russian, some Chinese, and something else. Jhameel was also a contestant on season 14 of American Idol as well. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with him during my college days. Back then I was in an Asian organization and in charge of organizing an event. I had stumbled on YouTube from that drunk cover and went down a rabbit hole. So I recommended having him as our guest performer. So we flew him in. The team and I also had a nice dinner with him. We had some cool conversations with him. Including about K-Pop. He said he wasn’t too familiar with K-Pop so he was really interested in learning about it and the process. So I remember we had a fun conversation where I talked about auditions, trainees and the training life, and different groups. It was fun. To my surprise, Jhameel later went on to [compete on Superstar K], a well known singing competition show in Korea. This was maybe 2-3 years after I met him? I just found out because I stumbled on him performing Taeyang’s [“Only Look At Me”] and BIGBANG’s [“Loser”] with Martin Smith. He made it to the top 5 too! And I’m only now just realized he also performed Zion.T’s [“Eat”] (one of my all time fave songs). That wasn’t all though. I was once hella jetlagged when I flew back from Thailand in 2015. So I decided to binge watch a J-Drama called [Dear Sister]. I was thinking that I was digging the soundtrack throughout the episode. I kinda also thought the style and vocals sounded familiar. Then I saw Jhameel’s name in the credits. So yeah, he worked on the soundtrack for that.

As for the song “Waves”, I believe he wrote this when his grandmother passed away. I think this was one of the first songs I discovered from him too. At that time I was really stressed, and had alot of personal stuff going on. I was still struggling with stress and things from my sister’s accident too. So when I found this song, it was like soothing comfort and a reminder. To this day, I remember that things come and goes in waves.

[Verse 1]
It won’t be long
It won’t be long ’till the world is gone
And soon we will no longer be young
Ashamed to have lost and won
And soon it will be just like it never was

[Chorus]
Is there no tomorrow for us?
Is there life or death, or nothing at all?
Everything goes away
Comes again anyway
Everything goes in waves
Gone tomorrow, here today
Everybody hesitates
Happy face, sad face
Everybody loves and hates
I just say it goes in waves

[Verse 2]
It won’t be long
It won’t be long ’till the morning comes
And soon we will be laughing at us
A shame that we don’t have much
And soon it will be just like it never was

[Chorus x2]
Is there no tomorrow for us
Is there life or death or nothing at all
Everything goes away
Comes again anyway
Everything goes in waves
Gone tomorrow, here today
Everybody hesitates
Happy face, sad face
Everybody loves and hates
I just say it goes in waves

Is there no tomorrow for us
Is there life or death or nothing at all
Everything goes away
Comes again anyway
Everything goes in waves
Gone tomorrow, here today
Everybody hesitates
Happy face, sad face
Everybody loves and hates
I just say it goes in waves

David Choi | Hold On

David Choi is another OG Asian-American YouTuber. He’s a Korean-American singer, songwriter, and producer. Y’all probably also recognize him for his work with other Asian-American YouTubers like Wong Fu Productions, Nigahiga, JK Films, etc. He’s also well known for being a member of [BgA (Boys generally Asian)] with Phil from Wong Fu, Ryan Higa (Nigahiga), Jun (juncurryahn), and actor Justin Chon. He’s also had several of his songs appear on several Korean dramas as well. I believe he also has an original song for some drama OST, and has a [Korean version] of it as well.

David Choi and his music, and this song in particular, hold a really special place in my heart. It really helped me through one of the toughest times in my life. I’ve talked about this before. So back in October 2010, my little sister was in a freak accident at school. A car had reversed, jumped the curb, hit her, and severed her right leg. This happened on the day I was to attend David Choi’s show in Orlando too. I was hella distraught and overwhelmed. I was in college about 4 or so hours away. I was told to stay put. So I didn’t know what my sister’s status was, other than she was in the ICU. I cried alot in those several hours. My friends decided to have me go to the show anyway to distract me and cheer me up. I cried more though because I felt awful since that morning I told her I was excited for the show, and because I promised her that I’d get her signed albums. It was a good show, but I was obviously a mess. My eyes were red and full of tears. I couldn’t help but cry throughout the whole thing. I met David and told him, and he generously wrote a message to my sister on the albums. He also let me in on a secret fun fact that his album covers actually connect to each other when placed side by side. He was really sweet. I did end up going back to my hometown later that night and took some time off of school. I spent that time in the hospital with my sister. It was hard for me to see her in that state, to see her struggling, and see how her life would drastically change. Especially since it was 2 weeks before her birthday too. I remember for several weeks, I would just cry at night. In that time I listened to “Hold On” alot. It honestly gave me comfort and encouragement to keep going on. I actually remember emailing him, telling him the situation, and thanking him for helping me and my sis through it all. He was really sweet to reply back too.

You fought your way up to the wall
But you haven’t gone past at all
While gazing with tear filled eyes
You just can’t help but ask why
If trying hard is what it takes
Then why does it feel like a mistake?
The world has taken its side
You just wanna run away and hide

It’s tough
There’s no one to turn to
I hear screaming inside you
Feels like hell’s all you’ve been through
Hell’s all you’ve been through

Hold on
Don’t stop your breathing
I see your dreams and
I feel them too
Hold on
Don’t lose your faith
I know you can’t break
I’m hoping and praying for you

All your peace seems far away
But you know there comes a day
When everything’s so bright
All the darkness you feel subsides
And in the rising of the sun
You can finally say it’s done
The world will take your side
And your heart will start to shine

I will
Be holding on to you
There is nothing you can’t do
I will try to be strong
Will try to be strong so

Hold on
Don’t stop your breathing
I see your dreams and
I feel them too
Hold on
Don’t lose your faith
I know you can’t break
I’m hoping and praying for you

I’ll never let go of you
I’ll never let go of you
I’ll never let go of you, of you

Hold on
Don’t stop your breathing
I see your dreams and
I feel them too
Hold on
Don’t lose your faith
I know you can’t break
I’m hoping and waiting for you

Clara C | Brighter Days

Clara C, or Clara Chung, is another OG Asian-American YouTuber. I believe she just goes by the name Clara now though. She’s a Korean-American singer and songwriter. You might also recognize her appearances of working with Wong Fu Productions, Ryan Higa (Nigahiga), David Choi, David So, etc. She also appeared and competed on a season of [Superstar K]. I believe she’s also [friends with K-Pop star Ailee], since Ailee was super excited and happy to see Clara. I also got an opportunity to meet her for another Asian organization event I was on. She also seemed pretty quirky and nice too. Clara also had several of her songs appear on various Korean dramas as well.

I think the lyrics speak for themselves. There are times everything feels really heavy, and you don’t really feel yourself. There’s just alot of worries and struggles. But, we can still hope for brighter days.

My world it feels so much heavier than the world itself
I can’t remember just how to get back to bein’ myself
All this heart is worryin’ with it’s head
There’s no sign of white, just flecks of red
And all I wanna do is break away, escape from all the winding figure eights,
Dreamin’ of a place that glows with rays… brighter days
Climbin’ up a hill on rough terrain,
Hopin’ this’ll all be worth the wait,

Keep on racin’ to a place of Brighter Days

Walking wires and I’m getting tired, don’t know where it goes
I keep on trying to mix the light with my sh-adows
All this heart is worryin’ with it’s head
There’s no sign of white, just flecks of red
And all I wanna do is break away, escape from all the winding figure eights,
Dreamin’ of a place that glows with rays… brighter days
Climbin’ up a hill on rough terrain,
Hopin’ this’ll all be worth the wait,

Keep on racin’ to a place of Brighter Days

{Oooo-ohhh ohhhhh }

And all I wanna do is break away, escape from all the winding figure eights,
Dreamin’ of a place that glows with rays… brighter days
Climbin’ up a hill on rough terrain,
Hopin’ this’ll all be worth the wait,

Keep on racin’ to a place of Brighter Days

Kina Grannis | Message From Your Heart

Kina Grannis is yet another OG Asian-American YouTuber. She’s a Japanese-American singer and songwriter. She originally had the opportunity to be signed to a major label, Interscope Records, after winning the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest. However, she ended up deciding it was better to be an indie artist. She’s also collabed with other Asian-American YouTubers like Wong Fu Productions and David Choi. I’m not 100% sure, but I think I also remember 1-2 of her songs making an appearance in an Asian drama somewhere. But her songs have definitely made appearances in US shows and well as shows from several other countries like Germany. She also famously performed her version of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” for the movie [Crazy Rich Asians]. I also got to see her live and meet her at an Asian organization event from another school during my college days. She was also really sweet and down-to-earth as well.

This is one of my favorite songs from Kina, and probably one of my most played songs from her. It’s an important and loving reminder to take care of ourselves. Sometimes we tend to overlook how hard we’re trying and trying to live. We’re often very hard on ourselves too. For me this is a reminder that my heart is beating and I’m still alive. That I’m trying my best to live.

[Verse 1]
Don’t break me, I bruise easily
The source of both your love and misery
I am steady beating endlessly
While you are dozing
Dreaming pretty things
I don’t work for free
Please take care of me

[Chorus]
This is a message from your heart
Your most devoted body part
Taking blood and making art
This is a message from your heart
Pounding away into the dark
You could thank me for a start
This is a message from your heart

[Verse 2]
Don’t hurt me, I bleed constantly
My effort to leave me blood flow back swiftly
My rhythm soothing like rain drops steady
On foggy windows when you gaze outwardly
I don’t work for free
Please take care of me

[Chorus]
This is a message from your heart
Your most devoted body part
Taking blood and making art
This is a message from your heart
Pounding away into the dark
You could thank me for a start
This is a message from your heart

[Outro]
Every time you sleep
Bum bum bum bum [3x]
Every time you eat
Bum bum bum bum [3x]
Every time you laugh
This is a message from your heart
(bum bum bum bum)
Your most devoted body part
(bum bum bum bum)
Taking blood and making art
(bum bum bum bum)
Every time you cry
This is a message from your heart
(bum bum bum bum)
Pounding away into the dark
(bum bum bum bum)
You could thank me for a start
(bum bum bum bum)
This is a message from your heart
(bum bum bum bum)
Every time you love
(bum bum bum bum)
This is a message from your heart
(bum bum bum bum)
This is a message from your heart

Stay safe and healthy out there, y’all.

BLACK LIVES MATTER

AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We are all too familiar with the racism that we, our friends, and family have faced on a daily basis. Every life is precious. However, as BIPOC, we also recognize that black people are a group of people that face extreme racism and at a higher risk for their safety. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation and understanding. Make sure to have those conversations. Please remember to be an active supporter, be it through donations, sharing information, and/or conversations and speaking up.

Keep it up fam!

If you can, please consider donating. I’ve donated more than once as well. For one of my donations, I donated through the BTS ARMY x BLM project. I recommend that if you’re unsure of where to donate. This is because the donation will be split amongst several different non-profit organizations. Of course, you can also choose a specific organization(s) if you wish as well. You can find that [HERE].

STOP ASIAN HATE

As an Asian-American, racism, xenophobia, and hate crimes against AAPI isn’t new. It’s always been around. Unfortunately, misinformation and the pandemic has caused an insane surge in racism and xenophobia. There has also been an insane rise in hate crimes. More recently, we’re seeing a surge of hate crimes against the Asian elderly. Particularly in the California and New York areas. Some cases even leading to injuries and even death. The sad thing is that many cases do not get alot of attention, or are just looked passed. It breaks my heart and is cause for concern since it affects our community. Since some of the BAYOG Crew (including myself) are Asian-Americans ourselves, I wanted to use our small platform to help in anyway. Hate, racism, and xenophobia is an ugly thing. We’re friends, in the same community, and against the same social injustices. So be kind and let’s fight these things together.

You can also check the following for more information, ways to help, & to donate:

Please report hate crimes at Stop AAPI Hate:
