Music Monday|Sunmi — Full Moon [Spoop Fest]

Hello BAYOG Fam!~ It’s Monday, so you know I’m back with another Music Monday post! However, do you know what else it is? [Spoop Fest] is here y’all! So if you didn’t know I love horror and the bros joke that I’m actually a terrifying psycho killer. So the spoopy season is one of my favorite seasons/holidays! So we started BAYOG Spoop Fest. Basically we try to keep our posts spoopy themed or related~ I figured I’d try to stick with the Spoop Fest theme for Music Monday posts too! So here’s your first Spoop Fest Music Monday post!~ Our first track is “Full Moon (보름달)” by Sunmi.

I won’t go into too much artist background since I kind of already did that in my recent [HA:TFELT Music Monday] post. Quick recap though, Sunmi was a member of second generation idol girl group, Wonder Girls. Wonder Girls was formed and managed under JYP Entertainment. They were one of THE top girl groups in K-Pop history. They were often seen as rivals of Girls’ Generation. Wonder Girls differed in style and concept from Girls’ Generation though. They were known for their retro sounds and concepts. Sunmi was one of the members in the original line up. However, she went on hiatus and left the group in 2010 to focus on her academic career. After a 3 year hiatus, she returned as a soloist under JYP Entertainment. She debuted as a soloist with [24시간이 모자라 (24 Hours)]. In 2015, she resumed resumed promotions as a Wonder Girls member until the group’s disbandment in 2017. Right after the disbandment and ending of her contract with JYP Entertainment, Sunmi joined Makeus Entertainment In March of 2017. In August of 2017, she released the single [Gashina(가시나)]. She’s had a pretty successful solo career as she transitioned from an idol girl group member to a sultry diva. Funnily enough though, it seems that Sunmi still favors retro aesthetics and sounds as evident in tracks such as [Heroine (주인공)], [Siren(사이렌)], and [pporappippam(보라빛 밤)]. Anyway, if you want to know more about Sunmi and Wonder Girls, you can check out that HA:TFELT post. Anyway, Sunmi was probably my bias in Wonder Girls. I just love her~

As I said, we’re cover “Full Moon (보름달)” today!~ It was from her Full Moon EP, which was her solo debut EP. It was the second track that she promoted. It was produced and written by Brave Brothers. This was the first collab between Brave Sound/Brave Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. The track has a dark and sultry sound to it. I think it’s basically a sultry pop/r&b track. It’s got hella dark and sexy vibes. You also got some jazzy bits with the saxophone (?) in there. The track also featured Lena Park, who performed a rap on the track. Lena was a known JYP trainee at the time. She became somewhat known due to this track. However, she never did debut. She decided not to renew her contract with JYP Entertainment. Instead, she chose to go back to the US to study acting. Apparently she was also a contestant for Miss Korea after leaving JYP Entertainment. While it may not be my most favorite Sunmi solo track, I do actually like it. It’s just that I like her other promoted singles more. “Full Moon” is still a great track though~

FULL MOON (보름달)

The MV is as dark and sultry as you’d expect it to be. In the MV, Sunmi is a vampire. Again, it fits the dark sound and aesthetic. I can’t say that I love the MV However, I do think Sunmi was really pretty. I also enjoyed the choreography. It does look a bit cheesey when the dancers and Lena just suddenly pop up around or smoke in and out. However, my only real compliant is Lena’s parts just look really awkward. It could be nervousness, but she just seemed stiff and unnatural. I also felt like the timing and lip syncing was kind of off or straight up awkward.

I do find the choreography interesting. Can I do it? Nope. However, it’s interesting since like “24 Hours”, it’s a bit more contemporary. Like “24 Hours”, Sunmi also performs this choreo bare feet. The choreo matches the sultry/sexiness of the song. However, parts of it was deemed too steamy and controversial for live performances. So parts of the choreo had been changed for live performances. These particular parts include Sunmi spreading her legs and moving her hips and butt. The hips and butt parts were typically toned down where she didn’t move it as much. However, the part where she spread her legs wide was changed. For the performances where there weren’t any changes, the camera would just pan into Sunmi’s face.

RANDOM FACT

Random fact: The storyboard for the Sardonyx fusion dance in Steven Universe was inspired and timed to Sunmi’s “Full Moon”. It was done under the recommendation of Rebecca Sugar.

Here are my timed out storyboards for Pearl and Garnet’s fusion dance. Rebecca recommended that I look at the choreography from the music videos of the KPOP group Sunmi. I ended up using the song “Full Moon” as the temp track for their dance. I hope it lived up to everyone’s expectations 😉
