Music Monday|LOOΠΔ —열기 (Heat)

Hey, BAYOG Fam! I have a bonus Music Monday post with another summer bop for you! I have a girl group track this time! For this post I’m recommending “열기”, or “Heat”, by LOOΠΔ/Loona!

LOOΠΔ, or Loona, is a girl group under Blockberry Creative. They’re also known as 이달의 소녀/Idarui Sonyeo, or Girl of the Month. This is probably the first group I’ve heard of having so many very different names LOL Anyway, they debuted in 2018. Again, I’m from the hella old school K-Pop eras (OG generation up to some 3rd generation; Although I was most active during the 2nd generation). I don’t really know much about Loona, but I have enjoyed several of their songs. I think one of the girls, Chuu(?), went viral for her cute way of making a heart. I believe it’s known as the “apple bite heart”.

Anyway, I’m not super knowledgeable about Loona. I just know that they got some great bops. They have really great vocals too. I think they’re also known for being great dancers. However, I’ll be honest. I haven’t really watched any of their videos. They’re one of those groups where I don’t really know their faces or any info on them. I just listen to their songs is all. I do know they’re super popular with the current generation. I believe there are 12 members. They also had 3 sub-units: Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy. The group also did a pre-debut promotional project starting around October 2016. Each member released a promotional song leading up to their debut. The member line up includes: HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye

Like I said, they’re very popular with the kids these days. I found out about them because everyone kept mentioning them on Twitter. Literally, I kept seeing “STAN LOONA!” everywhere. So I gave them a try. I think I heard tracks from one of the sub-units first, and really liked it. However, I think “열기” is the one that solidified my like for their music. I just love the sound of it. It’s a track with moombahton, deep house, and tropical house. The girls have such beautiful vocals. However, I just love how it’s a very sexy kind of track that embodies heat. I remember listening to it and just being like, “OOOOF!”. Like you can hear and feel the heat turning up. The vibe of this track just has me groovin’ along to it, and I love it. So yeah, it’s definitely a perfect summer track.

AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation. Make sure to have those conversations. Aside from donating, I had several conversations with my family. I explained things to my parents, especially since some news stories were being reported inaccurately. I was afraid it’d be a bit difficult. However, as fellow BIPOC and human beings, it was a necessary conversation. My parents and grandma understand, and now stand on the same page regarding BLM as well. Please remember to be an active supporter, be it through donations, sharing information, and/or conversations and speaking up.
