Music Monday|ONEUS — 가자 (Lit)

Hello BAYOG Fam! I’m still on a mini break as I brainstorm and try to make a backlog. I was just lucky enough to have prepared this one ahead of time hehe~ It’s Monday, so here’s another Music Monday post! Today we’ll be talking about “가자 (Lit)” by ONEUS(원어스) (*Pronounced “One Us”). ONEUS is a K-Pop boygroup under Rainbow Bridge World (RBW), the same label as Mamamoo! Prior to their 2019 debut, the members had been individually active on different survival reality shows like Mnet’s Produce 101 and YG’s Mix Nine.

Y’all know I’m old school K-Pop trash. Aside from the groups I really stan Sup BTS, I’m pretty low-key. I’m more familiar with OG, first generation, and second generation groups. I’m only somewhat familiar up to the third generation groups (BTS, Red Velvet, and Mamamoo era groups). I’ll enjoy songs from the new groups, but I’m not super heavily invested. To be honest, I’m not all that familiar with ONEUS at all. However, I came across their track “가자 (Lit)” and immediately loved it.

Artist: ONEUS
Album: Fly With Us
Year: 2019
Genre: K-Pop, Dance, Electropop, Fusion (Modern & Traditional)
Language: Korean

“가자 (Lit)” was released on their September 2019 EP Fly With Us. The Korean title, “Gaja”, translates to something like “Let’s go!” I am a sucker for songs that do a fusion of modern music with traditional eastern elements. I love the traditional Korean elements in the music itself and the imagery of the video. I love these fusion kind of songs, but I’ll admit that it’s hard to make good ones. I think this was definitely a good one. There are two versions of the song: the version on the EP, and the version they performed for Road to Kingdom. I like both, but personally prefer the Road to Kingdom version the most. I just like how the traditional elements are even more prominent in that version.

I really love the aesthetics of this MV
Threw in some extra fun with the choreo practice…cuz I’m a sucker for choreo

ONEUS joined Road to Kingdom/로드투킹덤 in March. Mnet’s Road to Kingdom is a reality competition with different idol groups. It’s the male counterpart to the popular Queendom, which their labelmates Mamamoo appeared on. They did an epic performance of “가자 (Lit)” for one of their performances. This version of the song is changed up a bit from the EP version. I’d say they went even harder on showcasing the Korean elements.

Seriously, watch this perf

It actually reminded me alot of when BTS performed Idol (which also has traditional Korean elements) at the [2018 MAMA]. Actually, I believe that the outfits for both performances were by the same Hanbok designer… I know this because I follow her on IG hehe~ Anyways, yeah…both performances went full out with showcasing traditional elements from the outfits, background performers, traditional instruments, etc. The performance also references Jeon Woochi, a Taoist scholar during the Joseon period. He’s famously known in as a sorcerer in history, and a trickster in literature. Anyway, I thought this performance was super topnotch. It was really like a big music show or concert level performance. They did not come to play. They went all out. I highly recommend checking the performance out.

Take care y’all. Please stay safe and take care of yourself. All jokes and fun aside…please, please, please, pleaaaase always wash your hands, practice social distancing, and wear a mask! I’m serious. Please take COVID-19 seriously. It truly is a matter of life and death. It’s something that needs to be taken seriously. It’s not just about the death of if you or someone you know gets it, but it also heavily affects those left behind. There are also aftereffects for those who are able to get through COVID-19. Be responsible. Be safe. Take care y’all. Have a wonderful day.

This is a difficult, but necessary matter to address. I’m not good at putting things into words, so I apologize. We all know the matter regarding the unjust murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. The current Black Lives Matter protests are being covered globally. I’ve even seen it being covered daily by the Thai news. Racism is a very real thing. Being Asian, I’ve personally encountered bullshit racism on a daily basis. So I can relate and understand the struggles. However, I’m also aware of how much more difficult and blatant it is for black POC. AS A GROUP OF BIPOC, BAYOG strongly stands with Black Lives Matter. We’ve individually done several donations. Of course, donations to support the cause and support change isn’t the only thing needed. Support for the cause and change also requires conversation. Make sure to have those conversations. Aside from donating, I had several conversations with my family. I explained things to my parents, especially since some news stories were being reported inaccurately. I was afraid it’d be a bit difficult. However, as fellow POC and human beings, it was a necessary conversation. My parents and grandma understand, and now stand on the same page regarding BLM as well. Please remember to be an active supporter, be it through donations, sharing information, and/or conversations and speaking up.

Keep it up fam!

If you can, please consider donating. I’ve donated more than once as well. For one of my donations, I donated through the BTS ARMY x BLM project. I recommend that if you’re unsure of where to donate. This is because the donation will be split amongst several different non-profit organizations. Of course, you can also choose a specific organization(s) if you wish as well. You can find that [HERE].

Stay strong. Fight racism, brutality, injustice, and bullshit. Don’t lose sight of the goal. We’re witnessing and being a part of history. Be allies and make sure change happens. Once again, BLACK LIVES MATTER.
