WEBTOON|The Dummy’s Dummy|Spoop Fest #4

Why hello BAYOG Fam!~ I’m back with another webtoon post for Spoop Fest!~ This time we’ll be dialing it back a bit. Today’s topic will be a PG-rated horror webtoon called The Dummy’s Dummy.

The Dummy’s Dummy is webtoon by Japanese-American webtoon artist/author Mochamura. It’s on Webtoon’s Canvas [HERE].

SYNOPSIS (Line Webtoons)

A PG-rated horror webcomic about a psychic girl named Yumi, an eerie living puppet named Paris, and the strange and often deadly monsters they face off against. Ghosts, ghouls, and… possessed teddy bears? Oh, my!

Here’s the thing guys…I only have a few things I’m scared of: heights, closed and overcrowded spaces, spiders, clowns…and creepy dolls. Bruhs. I don’t do creepy dolls, puppets, or dummies. They creep me out.

Every time I see those kinds of dolls or whatever…I’m just like, “NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. GOODBYE!” Loha’s Jess will agree with me…

So imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this webtoon… I saw “Dummy” in the title, and obviously a dummy in the art thumbnail….

The dummy did look creepy…but not as evil creepy like I expected? The little girl also looked kind of cute. I was also in need of something to read as I waited for my other series’ to update. So I thought I’d give it a try.

I’m glad I did because it ended up being quite interesting. The story is an interesting idea. Again, dummies are typically seen as being evil entities in horror stories. The dummy here can be scary, but he’s the good guy. He destroys, but he’s destroying dangerous creations.

His creator had a magical gift. He could build everything he wanted. However, it was flawed in that his creations would end up being the exact opposite of what he hoped for. Things he hoped would bring joy, became evil things that brought sorrow and death. That’s when he made the resolve to create something that’s true purpose was to destroy his other creations. Thus, Paris the dummy was born.

The other thing that made this series stand out was it’s charming art style. It’s a cute art style that’s paired with a horror story. Not only that, I liked that it didn’t rely on gore or grotesque graphics to paint the horrors. It’s something that everyone of all ages could enjoy (if they like horror/thriller series). Even with the cute art style or grotesque imagery, it manages to build a unique and spoopy story. You’re able to still experience the anxiousness and creepiness. It’s almost like the cute art lures you into a false sense of safety. Then shit happens and you’re like, “WTF??? NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.” Other than the pairing of cute art to a unique story, the characters are really charming. Yumi is adorable as heck. I love the contrast between her and Paris. Anyone read this yet? What are your thoughts? Are you a fan of dummies/dolls? Let me know!~
