When Your Interests and Anime Combine | How Many Heavy Dumbbells Can You Lift?

As many of you know, I’ve been working towards some fitness goals. I’m actually pretty close to one of my goals. I’ve lost around 90 pounds(Though I may have added some back on during this vacation I’m on). One thing that I’ve been doing to work through that goal is weight training. It’s gotten to the point that all of my youtube recommendations are weight training and routine videos. So I was very excited to know that there was going to be a weight training anime coming out in the Summer Season. So let’s talk about How many heavy dumbbells can you lift? or Dumbell Nan-Kilo Motero?

[Synopsis from ANN]

“Hibiki … Are you fat again?”

A friend’s cruel words which cut like a knife into the heart of Hibiki Sakura, a high school girl who loves to eat. Hibiki decided to go on a diet to be absolutely thin by summer vacation, but she cannot keep exercising right alone. That’s when Hibiki found herself before a training gym! Upon joining the gym, Hibiki meets her beautiful and charismatic student council president Akemi Sōryūin and steps into the intense yet enjoyable world of weight-training.

My initial thoughts when I first saw the art for the anime vs the manga was how polished it looked. I then looked to see who did the character designs and it was none other than Ai Kikuchi, the character designer for New Game! Apparently, the script is going to be done by Fumihiko Shimo who also did the scripts for New Game! I’m a big fan of New Game so I’m already sold on this anime.

The PV recently came out as well and it was a little hard to watch around friends. I was questioned if I was watching hentai… Jokes aside, I feel that they are portraying the workouts very well, I can even hear the weights clanking when one of the characters was doing prone leg curls. The girl bench-pressing looked a little weird but that’s about it. I do wish instead of jumping straight into showing the girls workout, we got to see Sakura first go to the gym and why she felt that she needed to. But this is the first PV so I’m fine with this.

One thing I love about anime like this is they unintentionally motivate people to participate since it’s much more achievable than some crazy action shonen series that most of them are on the supernatural side of things. I know that watching this will likely motivate me to do more in the gym and I may even learn some new things I didn’t know about weight training. I believe it will also help the girls that are concerned about getting too muscular to do weight training. That’s a real concern for most people so they would rather just do cardio instead.

So as you can see, I’m pretty excited about this anime adaption to air. I’ve had the manga queued up for some time but never got around to it. I also believe that I’d just like the anime art style a bit more anyways. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this anime? Is this something that you would be interested? What was the last anime that motivated you to do something outside of your comfort zone? Let me know in the comments below! Have a great day!

  1. Oh, this one’s this summer? Awesome. I’ve been looking forward to this one! Probably for less than wholesome reasons, but come on. Good to know there’s some talent behind it!

  2. I’ve been getting back into working out lately. I’m not to the weight-lifting bit (yet), but I think it’s really cool there’s an anime that’s being adapted to fit that audience. I feel like many different types of audiences are getting a little something for themselves, and I know I haven’t seen a dedicated show on working out… probably ever? At least not one that’s all about working out and not working out to become a better boxer or street racer.

    1. Yeah, I’m really anxious to see how the community responds to this show and happy there’s something related to fitness outside of traditional sports
