Webtoon| Your Letter — Nostalgic Feels

Hello, hello BAYOG Fam!
I know I’ve been slackin’… I gotta admit that I’ve been busy getting ready for the concert trip, my Thailand trip, and working on a wedding present for my uncle. Yeah, if you didn’t know…I’ll be on a mini-hiatus in about 2 weeks. Your hella basic Asian chick is goin’ back to the motherland. Don’t worry, I plan on gathering fun material for the blog during my trip.

Anyway, I recently stumbled upon a new webtoon on LINE Webtoons. It’s called, Your Letter. It’s a Korean webtoon by 조현아, or Hyeon A Cho. The original title in Korean was 연의 편지. From what I can tell, it was originally published by Naver webtoons in August 2018. LINE Webtoons started publishing the official English version on February 26, 2019. You can read it [HERE].

PLOT
Sori is a young and kind girl. Unlike her classmates, she couldn’t just ignore when a friend and classmate was being bullied. Unfortunately for her, going against the “normal routine” led to her being targeted. Sori is bullied mercilessly. She decides to escape by moving and transferring to a different school. However, her trauma has made it hard for her to connect with her new classmates. A lonely Sori realizes that her problems haven’t been solved at all. She suddenly finds a mysterious letter. The anonymous letter provides helpful information, and makes her feel welcomed and less lonely. It also leads her on scavenger hunt for the rest of the letters. Sori starts to adjust and enjoy her new environment a bit more, thanks to her anonymous guardian angel. Still, who wrote these letters for Sori? Why, and what will these letters lead to?

This is another webtoon that I started on a whim. I was looking to kill time since alot of my usual webtoons were on hiatus. I wasn’t expecting much. However, I really enjoyed it. Okay, so we all know I’m a hella basic Asian chick who loves Asian dramas right? I’m the old school drama fan. I really got into Asian dramas around 2000-2005? That period is basically when Asian dramas started getting more popularity. I like to call that era the “melodrama” period. Alot of titles then had this particular kind of story and feel. There was something sad, yet romantic. Your Letters really reminded me of the movies and dramas of that time. Despite it being a new series, it really brought on a sense of nostalgia for me. I can legit see how this could be made into a live action drama or movie that would perfectly fit with that era. Although the stories are all very different, the webtoon reminded me of Il Mare (aka the original Korean movie that The Lake House was based on), Love Letter, and Daddy Long Legs.

Sori is a kind girl. Like, you go girl. I’m proud that you had the guts to call them out and not be compliant. I’m sad that poor Sori was put in a bad situation that she didn’t deserve. You know, I’ve been bullied before when I was younger. Although, it was mild bullying and nothing like what Sori faced. I was bullied only by a small group of girls, and fortunately everyone didn’t agree with it. Still, I can understand Sori’s feelings. I know how nerve wracking it can be. I’ve also moved to new schools a few times, so I understand her feelings regarding that as well. It’s overwhelming. Despite everything, I like that she stuck to her principles. It’s fun seeing her go along with this little scavenger hunt. Most of all, I’ve enjoyed seeing how she’s brightened up with each letter.

Tell me this doesn’t remind you of Studio Ghibli films??!

Another thing I loved about this webtoon was the art style. It’s beautifully drawn and colored. It actually reminds me alot of Studio Ghibli works. Especially if you watch the animated trailer. It actually makes me wish that it was a little anime series or movie. It seems like flowers and nature may play a bigger role later on in the story. Which by the way, adds this bright, colorful, and whimsical aspect to this series. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the story develops.
