Webtoon| The Vault of Horror: A Collection of Nightmares [Spoop Fest #9]

Webtoon| The Vault of Horror: A Collection of Nightmares [Spoop Fest #9]

Hey loves~ Not gonna lie, I’m kind of low energy right now. It’s been a rough, draining, and overall bad week for me. So forgive me, but I’m going to keep it shorter than usual today. Today, I’ll be continuing BAYOG’s Spoop Fest with another webtoon post! We’ll be talking about The Vault of Horror: A Collection of Nightmares. It is another horror anthology series. Again, each story is by a different author and artist. It was originally released on LINE Webtoons back in September 2014.

If I were to be honest, this wasn’t my favorite of the horror anthology webtoons on LINE Webtoons. I mean, I like them. However, I didn’t find them as impressive as the other webtoons we’ve covered. There were alot of chapters that felt “Meh” to me. However, there are some pretty decent and good chapters as well. You can find the webtoon [HERE].

Here are the chapters/stories that I liked and/or found pretty interesting:

1

Chapter 1| “Research” by Yeon JeWon | [LINK]
A webtoon artist and his friend are working on a horror webtoon. They want to find something new that would actually be chilling. The friend, being in charge of the story, decides to go visit a well known haunted mental asylum for research. He mysteriously disappears without a trace. However, the author starts getting some eerie emails from his missing friend…

I might be blind, but I don’t think they actually put the author’s name on this chapter. I had to go do some freakin’ detective work on Naver and read Korean to find out.  I do believe the author made himself as the protagonist in this story though… Seeing as it’s about a webtoon author working for Naver (where many of these Korean webtoons on LINE Webtoons originate from). It’s creepy enough, and I like how the author put himself in his story. Also…I’m not 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure the mental asylum from this story might be or be based on the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital. Supposedly, Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province is known as one of the most haunted places in South Korea. I believe there’s a horror movie based on it as well. It’s called Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. I think it’s one of those found footage horror flicks.

Chapter 3| “Profile” by SeungChan Lee | [LINK]

There are billions of people in the world. Have you ever thought about people who share the same name as you? One man decides to search his name on the internet out of boredom. He finds all sorts of people with very different lives from him. However, he stumbles upon a page that shows alot of hate towards a man who shares his name.

A little note at the bottom of the webtoon that states that it’s based on an urban legend that’s been circulating in South Korea. This story isn’t scary. I just found it interesting. It makes you wonder what people think of you, and how sometimes you don’t really know people at all.

Chapter 4| “The Maze” by TMJ/Linda (??) | [LINK]

A man and his friend stumble a seemingly simple maze at an old abandoned amusement park. They decide to check out the place for fun. However, they may be in for more than what they bargained for when they can’t find a way out.

There’s some slight creepiness in it. I found it interesting at least. Like, I can totally see this as a Korean horror flick. Also, this was another chapter where the author’s name wasn’t listed next to the title. So I’m just guessing it based on the name at the bottom corner at the end of the chapter.

Chapter 6| “The Nightmare” Story by ManSub Im and Art by RaeHyun Seo | [LINK]

Many people fear sleep paralysis. That’s what happens to one man. And that’s only the beginning of his long and seemingly never ending nightmare.

I liked this because I think everyone’s been through sleep paralysis at least once, and we’ve all had nightmares before. It’s interesting to me because I can relate to some of this. Apparently, this is based on something that actually happened to the author. He states that this really did happen and that he did not exaggerate it. Anyways, it’s interesting to me because I’ve had some similar moments of overwhelming uneasiness and anxiety before sleeping. I’ve had several strange sleep paralysis moments and other things. I’ve also had dreams and nightmares where I was lucid dreaming, but couldn’t seem to control what was happening or wake myself up.

Chapter 14| “A Summer Ghost” Story by Siu and Art by Gang Kim | [LINK]

Don’t you hate suddenly waking up in the middle of the night because you have to pee? Wouldn’t you hate it more if you find a ghost in the middle of your home?

I think we can all relate to that awful feeling of waking up to go pee. It’s not really scary. I mean the idea is creepy. It already sucks having to suddenly pee in the middle of the night. It sucks even more when you run into a ghost, and it’s in your way. Honestly, it’s funny. Just read it for the laughs.

Chapter 19| “How to See Ghosts” by Lee Seung Chan | [LINK]

A man stumbles upon an interesting post about how to see ghosts. He decides to test it out himself.

This is a bit creepy. Especially if you’re one of those people that overthink and think about being home alone. That would suck. Then again, you shouldn’t be trying to summon ghosts and shit either so…
Also…Bruh…Everyone knows you should always keep a shit ton of salt on you if you’re dealing with a ghost.

Chapter 22 | “The Author” |[LINK]

A popular novelist is confronted by a former neighbor. His former neighbor claims that he realized the novelist is tied to his daughter’s disappearance after reading his novel

Again, I didn’t see the author’s name anywhere. I kinda saw where this was going. Still, I find it interesting because I can totally see a movie with this kind of story.

Chapter 23 | “The Guest House” | [LINK]

A group of friends decide to visit a haunted guest house…

I just found the art style interesting. I used to love art. I used to draw all the time, and I was a former art major in university (before finally switching majors to something completely different). I loved the pencil sketch and water colored kind of art style going on here. Story-wise, I could see where it was going. Still, it seems like one of those ghost stories you’d tell friends over a campfire or something. Also, this is another chapter that doesn’t seem to name the author…

Tell us what you think...
