Can’t Believe I’m Still Watching: Tokyo Ghoul:re 2

I feel like I’ve become part of a dying species of people who are actually looking forward to more Tokyo Ghoul. It’s kind of strange because there’s nothing about it that is super good to keep me around but I guess just the fact that I’m so close to being done with this anime series. I plan to completely read the manga after it’s done so then I will probably see what this anime adaption is as terrible as the community likes to make it out to be. But for now, let’s watch this final season together and share our thoughts. Definitely leave yours in the comments below. Okay, let’s jump right in!

So, the episode begins with what looks to be what will happen in the final episode. A battle between Aogiri and the Doves with Kaneki somewhere in the middle of all of it. We get to see who some of the characters from Tokyo Ghoul:re are facing and little to no information on how we got to where we are now. After we are shown the new OP(which I will get to later) we get back to the present of Tokyo Ghoul:re after the events of the finale of re. We now have Dark haired Kaneki with an even darker personality which somewhat reminds me of Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 3 without the emo dance number. Then shit escalates with the announcement of Eto Yoshimura’s alter ego, popular writer Takatsuji, that she is a ghoul to the public. We are presented with Eto’s and Rize’s backstory which feels super out of place. Like fuck. Shit is just happening super fast. We learn about Group V who is apparently a clan of ghouls who work as doves…

So much has happened in this one episode. So much information has been unloaded on us as the audience that I feel like I need to break out charts and create conspiracy boards. There were many times that I had to stop and look into things which were just annoying and tedious. This may be fine to some but I just didn’t enjoy it. What is also super annoying is the lack of acknowledgment of the existence of the squad that Kaneki lived with. Like what the hell. Just feels like we are getting a TLDW of a season.

Nothing else about the episode was very noteworthy. The animation for fighting scenes was pretty subpar and very choppy. The OP and ED were underwhelming which is very disappointing to me since I feel that that is usually their strong point. I was happy to hear TK from Ling Tosite Sigure singing that OP. So it had some redeemable qualities.

I really didn’t want to come into this first episode vomiting my toxic opinion but I was just disappointed. At the same time, I should’ve seen this coming. Since it was announced that this was the last season and it was only going to be 12 episodes even though the events after the first season of Re in the manga is like a remaining +65% I should have known this kind of thing would happen(God, that is a long sentence). Also, don’t treat that metric as anything but a wild ass guess. I just know there is a large amount of content they need to fit in 12 episodes.
