Why It Took Me So Long To Watch Attack On Titan

Why It Took Me So Long To Watch Attack On Titan

I finally caught up on Attack on Titan. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t say caught up since I finally watched it for the first time. I always knew about Attack on Titan and I even watched the first few episodes but I think the hype or the length of the show stopped me. When you go from being a seasonal anime watcher to binging, you feel that you are wasting more time doing it(at least for me). In actuality, we spend the same amount of time watching it just not distributing the time “Reasonably.” So I thought I can talk a little about why it took me so long to watch this series and why I’m going to start being more open-minded.

If you know me outside of this blog, you would know me as the critical reviewer as much as I probably don’t go super hard in my reviews. A perfect example of this is me watching any show with CG. I hate CG. When I see a show with CG, they have minutes to win me over or I’m out. I’m getting better(I think) about that but I can’t help but see it as a way to cut corners in animation when done poorly. There are only a handful of animators that use CG because they have specific goals in mind that they know will be presenting in kick-ass fashion. My main point with this is, if I see a show that cuts hard corners, I’d probably avoid it as one of the reasons to stay away from it even if the story is amazing.

With Attack on Titan, it became this big mainstream series when mainstream anime was just coming back to fruition, like Sword Art Online. As much as everyone loves that series, my over critical self can’t stand it. So maybe with some kind of “elitist” mentality, I might have just written of Attack on Titan as being something similar to Sword Art Online because of Popularity.

It’s kind of funny how much my opinions on anime has changed in a year. Last year, I ONLY watched seasonal anime and it was like 20 shows a season. Kind of crazy to think how much I watched but at the same time, there were people that were watching 30+. Insane. I would only watch the “good shows” but to who’s standards? I sometimes feel that the people that I watch/read reviews for have unintentionally passed on their harsh standards onto me. So I think my main problem was, I distanced myself from anime that could potentially blow my mind because of my closed mind.

As much as I would love to talk about Attack on Titan with you guys, I’ll leave that for a Throwback Thursday. I let this stew for far too long and thought I should share it. One thing to learn or take away from this post is to be open-minded and don’t let someone else’s opinion prevent you from enjoying something. Watch it for yourself, then you may be able to have a discussion about it and even change their minds. You never know until you try!

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. If you liked, let me know by hitting that like button and I would love to hear your thoughts about this subject so definitely leave a comment! Have a great day!

  1. I think I had a similar block with Haikyuu for ages. It was recommended so many times and I just dismissed it as another sports anime and moved on. When I finally started it, it really hooked me and I’m glad I ended up watching it (all three seasons of it). I still wouldn’t say I’m a sports anime fan, but I am far more open minded these days.

    1. I was literally in the same boat with Haikyuu specifically. Series’ like that give me hope that I can find something great in all kinds of anime genres that I was never into. I just need to continue working on being open minded. Thanks for sharing Karandi
